what is the purpose of a homily why do we even give homilies when we could cut Mass short by 10 to 12 minutes is the purpose of a homily to make me look good or to entertain you definitely not is the purpose of the homily to reveal some insight into the holy scriptures yes that is true is the purpose of a homily to point to the sacrifice that we have at the altar every Mass yes that's true is the purpose of a homily to speak the truth encouragement to the Believers yes that's true the purpose of the homily is to feed you the word of God so that you may go out and feed others because you have been fed this last point is one that we are focusing on as a parish in a diocese yes this is a major part of why we have homilies at Mass we know that when gathered as Brothers and Sisters in Christ Christ is with us he's in our myths our being together the very fat and the act of gathering together we have the present of Christ where two or three are gathered in his name there I am with them this encourages each one of us as participants of the mass and we are fed and supported by one another so we are fed with company of each other we are fed when we receive the word of God through the scriptures and we are fed at the table of the Lord upon receiving Jesus in the Eucharist when we are fed we therefore can go out and feed the world which is so hungry for Truth for true life and to know when to live for Jesus call Mike Hartley clergy Brothers have the same desire which is to feed the flock and to have them receive The Graces of the sacrament that we have in the church I want all members of the church to be nursed at the table of the Lord so that not one soul is lost we want every soul to know Jesus Christ and to literature with him this is the pearl of great price this is the treasure we hear about in Our Gospel today one of my favorite, Lee store is that there was a Catholic Church up North Minnesota and it was an extremely hot Sunday morning even for a Sunday morning Mass people packed into small church that had no air conditioning and a few ceiling fan slowly turning actually blowing hot air down on the congregation it was standing room only and ask the math with on and it came time for the homily the priest saw many in the congregation with beads of sweat dripping off their faces and you could see that they terribly uncomfortable and he too was Dripping under the vestment he got up to the pulpit he paused for a moment and said is hotter he sat down even after this short three word homily the priest desired that nobody loses their soul wanted the best for everyone in our Old Testament readings we hear of Solomon's request not for himself not to acquire a long life riches or the life of his enemies but he requested something that was the best for everyone else and that was to have the wisdom and understanding to lead God's people Solomon was wise and wanted the best to distinguish between right and wrong as he governed God's people likewise in our God today Jesus gives us a parable about finding a buried treasure in a field and the person goes and tells everything that he has and buys that field and again someone find the pearl of great price and goes and sells all that they have and buys it Heaven is the best Heaven is worth everything it is worth all the sacrifices that we have in our life and I'm especially reminded of the mothers and wives who sacrificed so much for their children and their husbands reminded of fathers and husbands who sacrifice and provide for their families I'm reminded of those who suffer physical or mental ailments or those who suffer the loss of loved ones so what keeps us from the pearl of great price a couple things the first is that sometimes we don't recognize it we are distracted by the finite things of this world and we don't see the infinite life of eternal life we are so caught up in the day today that we lose sight of our goal eternal life with God now there are things that we can do to see eternal life things that can sharpen our minds and our spirits to keep our Heavenly goal in mind they're small things that we you throughout the day and redirect our minds and our hearts to the treasure we have in Jesus we can have a daily prayer time we can frequent the sacraments we can study or read good books we can have healthy relationships and we can offer the day to Jesus first thing in the morning and praise the examined in the evening these little acts done throughout the day can help us reorient our heart towards our goal eternal life with God the pearl of great price and the second we can be kept from recognizing the Pearl but we are too attached to the world that we think that somehow we can have the Pearl and the things of the world or we just want the things of this world and give up the Pearl the point is not that we have the heavy things is bad it's about being too attached valuing them more than a relationship with God this is really a matter of the heart when our hearts turn more towards worldly things they turn away from God what can we do to continually turn our hearts back to the Lord how can we be detached so that we give up what we want for what we really want which is heaven but effective way is to fasting and sacrifice it is easy to think that these practices are only done during Lent but they are important habit for us throughout the year there are many small simple things that we can do throughout the day fasting from criticism or negativity giving up a treat or a video game or social media perhaps clean up a little bit earlier so we can hit spend more time in prayer fasting and sacrifice can strengthen our Relationships by even small acts of service or making the to recognize the good in the other all these little acts can sharpen our awareness of the goodness of God all around us turning our hearts back to him Heaven is worth striving for every single day and getting to know Jesus Through other relationships is one very practical way we know that when our days are done here on Earth there will be a judgment day and the wicked will be separated from the righteous and only the righteous those who know Jesus will go and see our Lord face to face I want each one of us to know Jesus to love Jesus through our Brothers and Sisters in Christ and to be witness for Jesus in bringing others to Christ as we are fed the truth we strive to sell all that we have for the pearl of great price we too want that every single soul nose and meet our lord Jesus for eternal life when we conclude Mass the final prayer is a commissioned go forth the mass is ended or going announce the gospel of the Lord this is a charge a word of encouragement for each of us to take the food that we have been fed and share it with the world around us
