my name is Father Nick Fraley and I am the pastor at church of Saint Michael in Farmington and it's good to be with you today was open with prayer the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Barrett MN good and gracious God we give you praise and thanksgiving for all that you have made us to be Lord you are the author of human life and you have inscribed our vocation is in our hearts Lord aspect you pour out your spirit upon us that we may listen to your word then we may hear your voice and that we may hear where you are leading us give us a great to follow after you that we may one day Rejoice with all the saints and angels in the Heavenly Kingdom we asked this all through Christ Our Lord amen name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit on men angel call II when he first became Pope began giving a series of weekly audiences where he was reflecting on really the creation account of where we came from and on our own and specifically what he was trying to do with addressing how by are very creative nature there's things that we learn about who we are as human beings who we are as mail and email and how we relate to each other to God and to the world around us in a particular way this is helpful for you as you are preparing to enter into the great sacrament of holy matrimony the way in which John Paul II began his Reflections was by first looking at the gospel account and specifically a moment where Lord addresses a question about marriage this particular passage comes from Matthew chapter 19 that when Jesus had finished these things he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan and large crowds followed him and he filled them there and Pharisees came to him and tested him by asking is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause he answered how do you not read that he who made from the beginning made them male and female and said for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one so they are no longer two but one what they're for God has joined together let no man put asunder our Lord refers us back to the beginning in order to understand a teaching on marriage Christ wants his audience reflect back ultimate Origins the origin of our Humanity nice for us today we'll start at the beginning looking at where we came from and that will help us understand where we are going so when we think back to the origin of humanity would think of the Book of Genesis and specifically those creation accounts most of us are familiar with them specifically how Godfrey the universe in six days and the rest on the 7th is that John Paul II actually began his Reflections not looking at that account but actually looking at the second account of creation where God intimately involves himself and the creation of Adam literally forming him out of the Dust and there's an interesting line that God speaks about Adam after he has created he says it is not good for man to be alone is not good for man to be alone this line is very rich because it reveals she was actually several different text of who we are in the depth of our humanity and what we are made for is not good for man to be alone man Adam was originally created in solitude it's original Solitude though reveal something about who he is and about his unique position and all of the created order revealed by his body I don't see that he has a complete individual but he is also alone God gives him the animals looking he says for a suitable help me and Adam names all of them that the end naming all of the animals Adam still recognizes that he is alone our bodies revealed to us that actually we are different than the rest of the create order we are more than just material beings there's something deeper in us so we are more than the animals but we are also less than the angels we would say we are not best bodies nor are we just Souls but we are Body and Soul composite join together in an undivided Union and this is revealed by the fact that had mm finds himself alone so all of us experience with unique position in creation plus I wear a body and soul composite but then furthermore Adam is alone I need someone to compliment him is there looking for someone to be alongside him and so we actually see that we are created being Union with each other and specifically male and female it's a God put Adam into a deep sleep and from that sleep God takes from his side a rib and formed Eve and even in this we can see the great dignity and the equal Dignity of man and woman God and take something from had so that he would be placed over him nor did he take something from his foot so that she would be placed under him but rather took something from his side that these two were going to be equal equal dignity equal work equal in their desire to be loved and to be United with each other and as soon as Adam awakes he recognizes now there's someone there who is a suitable helpmate as big as the scripture says as someone who is equal to him this is Eve that now there are two can become one and this is the original Unity by Saint John Paul II talks about that from male and female we actually see that this is our Humanity that we instantiate we are incarnate beings as either male or female and that ain't seen the other we recognize ourselves and we actually are called then to be United together to join together as the communion of persons and this is what our Lord with you and gain at that the Two Become One flesh that through marriage the two of you become one become one and that Union is fruitful what this means then is that we actually Bear the image of God in a very particular and bodily way in marriage and even though the second creation account John Paul II will say doesn't actually talk explicitly about the image of God and how men and women are created in His image and likeness that actually when we examine who Adam is who it is and how they respond to the world around them and how they come together United that actually this reveals to us what it means to be made in the image and likeness of God that we actually are called to come together in a fruitful Union filled with faith hope and charity it is good though to also reflect them a little bit the creation account where the image of God is mentioned explicitly cuz it's also reveals how we are to live our lives and that's in that first creation account where God very orderly Kris the heaven the Earth the Sun the moon the stars the land the animals that inhabit the waters in the sky and then the animals that inhabit the Earth and then man and woman male and female he created them in the image and likeness oh God he created them what is it to be in the image of God and in the first creation account we see a different approach to this image that for us. in the image of God means that we have been endowed with the ability to act like God acts in that first creation account to use reason to order be free to Will she was our intellect these are good gifts that were given to us by the Creator so each of us and our individuality are free we had the ability to reason and we have the ability to act according to truth and then according to the second creation can we see that we're not meant to be alone but actually to come together and form Union and communion a person that bears fruit in our lives September creation account we see that original plan of God for us what's a freely create a commune in a person's and to live according to truth now we know that this portion of a scripture is actually rather short thesaurus man and woman don't live very long before the fall before they experience that original sin and that's the place in which we ourselves are located we are located and a world and which sin has entered and this means something for us it means that those original ideals Aquarium Way God wants us to live are going to little bit more challenging Wednesday saying enter the world several things happened first and foremost we say that our freedom all sin was compromised as well as our ability to always act according to the truth because now there's a portion there's a part of us we would say that isn't scientist in and this is something that we recognize GK Chesterton who is a great author of the English language talks about how original sin is the one thing for which there is empirical evidence we can just look at the world around us and see that many times we don't act in the way that we ought to and that we actually choose what is not ultimately good for us so there is this inclination to send sometimes known as concupiscence there's also disorder that's brought into the relationships Adam and Eve rejected that original plan from God and this had those consequence we now experienced a sort of alienation we would say from God from even the parts of ourselves from others around us and even the rest of the created order and so is quite a dire state in which Humanity found itself because the there's this rupture and all these different relationships that were so good at the beginning and it could lead to despair thankfully though even at that moment God wanted to give Adam and Eve a little bit of Hope so he talked a little bit about his ultimate plan for salvation sometimes known as the Proto gospel how he foretells how there will be one who Rises up who will strike at the serpent and this ultimately refers us back to where we began our talk today to our Lord Jesus Christ who came to us incarnate in the flesh this is important so that we could be free God wanted to redeem the whole of humanity you didn't just want to redeem our souls he wanted to redeem our bodies as well and that meant that he wanted to come to us as one of us as one who is Like Us in all things except sit so with Jesus Christ with his arrival on the scene if you will the world radically changes all those alienation those fractured relationship supposed disorder passion sure they still exist but price has entered into that to redeem it and each of us especially through the sacrament of baptism have been restored to Grace and I've had the experience of our relationship being restored first and foremost a relationship to God but now also the ability to be in right relationship with one another and with ourselves and with the created world around us but then is a challenge because it's not something that we will do automatically we still live with the marks of sin we still live in a world that is been broken by Original Sin sofa goal for us as Christians then must be to constantly rely on Grace offered to us by Christ that when we turn to our Lord and prayer and the sacraments offered us by the church we are able to live out that call to original Holiness that Universal called that all of us have received again to live according to the truth to come together and be United as a fruitful communion of persons and specifically for you for preparing to enter into matrimony this is the way and with Christ is asking you to live out this call he's actually giving you a great adventure and a great Challenge and a worthy one by which you're going to give out this call to love this call to come together is called to be fruitful missed call to be faithful ultimately it will be through your living out of a holy marriage that you will experience below Redemption for you and be able to reveal his plan to those around you this is a great gift and it's a great opportunity and wall that means is that our God is to be more than simply an add-on on your wedding day are God's actually going to be that pillar upon which you can have that fruitful Union that are very bodies are calling us to have so just want to encourage you in that as well as to recognize that the more that you continue to patent your life on Christ the more that you just look at how he his church is bride the more you're going to be able to love your spouse the way in which Christ loved us what's to go to the cross for us to lay down his very life so that we could be lifted up isn't that one of the greatest gifts you could give your your future spouse lay down your life for them so that they can be lifted up so that they can live experience great joy this call is called to the really die to self so that the other can live actually inscribed and who we are as crazy the beings that's who we are in this vast world this place where we occupied just this really unique Place between the angels and the Animals this place where we return to each other in see in the other ourselves and also see in the other the call to love and to call to be fruitful and to call to be faithful I will be praying for you that as you can how to prepare for the day and wish you two are joined together as one flesh and the sacrament matrimony that you will experience the riches and blessings of our Lord and that you were experience a life of abundance that you will be able to experience the joy of living your vocation well so that one day you will rejoice with all the angels and Saints in the Heavenly Kingdom our very call through who we are as men and women created body and soul and how you called us together to form a communion of persons that is truthful I would ask that you bless these couples they will pour out your spirit upon them the bay to may experience the joy of knowing you that they will experience the joy of marriage but they will experience fruitfulness that they will be able to lay down their lives for each other so that their spouse may experience tremendous abundance Lord protect your servants and bring I'm at last into the kingdom of heaven we asked this all through Christ Our Lord in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit on that
