next time I see him I tell father Wilson what are the Gophers ever done for you know that was gopher stuff all over the rectory come on I mean seriously man what what have I ever done for you except bring disappointment I know you I know you love them and but give me the pastor's away the neighboring Pastor has to get in his little dig that's a silly little conversation little internal conversation how many of you have done that very same thing maybe a not so light-hearted away in the this month maybe someone at work someone within your family something some person that you are friends with on Facebook said if I saw that person I would tell them you know what and we rehearse he's mental conversations we think we want want to have with people and set them straight and make them see that we're right and that was a light-hearted example but if you're like me there are those internal conversations that I rehearse with people who may have hurt me very deeply I carry a very good burden and God wants to set us free from those sorts of things Saint Paul says to the Galatians in the second reading be careful that you do not be consumed by one another biting and flowering one another in speech Anna gospel James and John went there met with this obstacle in the Samaritan Village that won't welcome their lord their master what their first instinct is to call down fire from heaven to consume to consume they perceived to be their enemies the rejected Jesus the Lord rebukes them because Lord knows but they will be consumed themselves by that sort of hatred by that hanging onto bitterness and resentment by letting ourselves be hurt so deeply that we in a sense in save ourselves so what do we do what do we do when in fact as I said people have heard us situations of Life have been very painful for us and we're tempted to just stay within our cell we're tempted to stay within ourselves and just keep feeding the hurt feeding the resentment we will be consumed working conditioning ourselves for a sort of slavery Lord says we have been set free for Freedom Christ set you free Saint Paul says the key I think is to do exactly what Jesus him did as always Jesus is always the universal moral example for us and is very beautiful phrase at the beginning of the Gospel passage we heard today it's really pivot point in the whole Gospel of St Luke chapter 9 verse 51 we're Jesus in the words we heard resolutely determined to go to Jerusalem knowing exactly in his perfect knowledge Jesus Christ God and man in his perfect knowledge knowing exactly what that meant everything that he would suffer all the hurts that would be thrown at him all the fists that would be thrown at him all the whips Scourge that would be laid upon him the nails that would be driven through his hands and that he's still sets his face right that's actually the more beautiful and poetic translation of that phrase that he set his face he set his face like Flint he Italy determined to embrace suffering to embrace the deprivations that would have weighed him and take upon himself freely take upon himself that suffering for the sake of our salvation that's what he calls us to do as well we will always do it in perfectly again in Christ you have been set free if we can learn to embrace suffering we will be more free we will be more able to let go of those hurts to let go of those interior conversations and voices that oppress us that burden us that make life just seem heavy and dry an empty at times self denial is the key is part of that Embrace of suffering that Christ shows us why we here in our readings this Sunday about Not Looking Back Elisha the prophet Not Looking Back these persons that the Lord meets in the gospel and this is probably I want to say this infallibly this is probably one of those places where the Lord is using hyperbole that he's exaggerating to make a point don't even go bury your father don't even say goodbye to your family even the best things in this world I'm since we must learn to be detached from if we are going to have that freedom that Christ wants to give us in himself in his example of patient and generous suffering sweep for the grace in this Eucharist to really be set free to be set free because here here we are able to receive the fruit of that sacrifice will you receive the fruit of what happened when resolutely determined the carry out his father's will we received the fruit we receive spiritual nourishment in this bread from heaven to embrace that generous life at 3 if we hold onto nothing of this world because we have boundless confidence in God we have boundless confidence in God that he will be enough in those times where we'd very much like to lash out we very much tune to keep cultivating that bitterness within our heart he is enough for those moments so we cry out to him become forward we say Amen say Lord I do believe that you are enough don't call down fire from heaven upon my enemies fill my heart with your peace the peace that only you can give for Lord you are indeed my inheritance
