recently a professional basketball player made an announcement that she was stepping away from the game at least temporarily for about a year in order to spend more time with her family and and also to pursue what she described as dreams of of ministry that she'd had for a long time and as I was reading as I was reading a few articles the other day about her about her the odd that the response to it and and we got to take this a little bit considering the audience that probably the people are are writing to but as they were as they were writing about her decision to to do that at the peak of a of a very successful career they the the the writers put it in terms of she's leaving in order to spend more time with her family and do ministry in and quickly quickly after that point to how is this going to affect her team how is this going to affect her her team and as I was reading that and thinking you know what I think very very easily this the press that was writing it I could easily substitute for the world it could easily substitute for the worlds interpretation of of what people do particularly people of faith when they're acting from the depths of their hearts when they're acting from the depths not responding to the core of their being in the presence of God and and a call because it between the lines of of what the how they were reporting was essentially an attitude that said you know what she has experienced an awful lot of success she's really good at at what she does she's making a very good living at it why in the world would she step away to do something like this why would she do that but the truth is I think I have it exactly wrong cuz she's really pursuing happiness authentic happiness authentic authentic love and I suspect probably she will be happier doing this than she was playing basketball there's certainly nothing wrong with with with playing basketball but the truth is that the world will say that that that path to happiness is is a is a goal towards Fame and a little bit of Fortune and she had she had some of both there was no doubt she had she had some of both but we also know as people of faith that it human beings we go a lot deeper than that and there's plenty of evidence plenty of evidence that suggests a little bit of Fame and a little bit of Fortune does not guarantee happiness and in many cases can actually run counter to it and we know that we we we know that by observation even if lived experience directly for us and we also know we also know us as people of Faith what we are made for and how we were made as human beings created in God's image and likeness of God created us I would have loved in Freedom to love and to be loved that's the that is the heart of the human person the heart of the human person is that we are we are created free we are created out of love we are created to love and to be loved and essentially our entire lights circles around that those realities and the seeking out of authentic love the seeking out of using that gift of Freedom 2 something good but we also know very very clearly we also know very very clearly that is we are we are created to to love and to be loved we don't always necessarily love as well as we could we also know that created in Freedom and create created with freedom that we don't always use that gift of a freedom the way that God intends us to to to use it we know that it's all its it's it's all over the place and the truth is that we live in at we live in a culture in a world that frankly turns around the plan and design of God for the human person it suggests the happiness comes the things of the world that Fame and Fortune it suggests that freedom means being able to do whatever I want whenever I want we also know very very clearly but that doesn't make people happy we probably all have people at our lives maybe we went through stages of Our Lives on our own in which we did whatever we want whenever we wanted and it didn't lead to happiness it's simply didn't but the truth is authentic happiness authentic happiness and the love that we desire to have only comes through complete and total self gift complete and total self donating love that is the is the route to happiness that is the path to happiness and I suspect when is basketball player made that decision to step away from the game at least for a while that's exactly what was in her heart and her mom pursuing happiness in Italy in a environment of giving herself away and today we celebrate as it and remember the doctrine of the Holy Trinity that God is Father Son and Holy Spirit and that three in one idea three persons in one God it can be a confusing thing from mathematical equation reality it can be something that frankly people who are hostile to Christianity will use to attack us and their misunderstanding of it and it can be great spot for magnificent theological conversations in classrooms and and all over the place it's a it's a wonderful thing but if it's only an esoteric but it's only an esoteric conversation in classrooms it's not coming down to the is it actually impacts the life of us as everyday Disciples of Jesus Christ but in the Trinity and the Holy Trinity of Father Son and Holy Spirit what we have is a mom of that self donating love that we are go to that will lead to authentic happiness the Father the Son the spirit completely give themselves to each other and giving themselves to each other they invite all of us into that to experience shared love and then they call us to that same thing they call us to that they call it and it took us to that to that same thing that that same gift to restored and return to that original Freedom tourist one tooth to respond to that call and that reminder that it's in giving ourselves away that we actually experience happiness in a few minutes we'll be doing will be doing a blessing of our fathers and of all are married couples here today and all of you who live in those vocations which are defined by by the call to be generous to people around you know you know very well and your lived existence that is when you give yourselves away that you are going to be most satisfied in it and it becomes maybe it becomes a become second nature as it is lived out that picture yourself living in perfect self donate David none of us dies because we are compromised but the truth is as we live that call as we live at call to self donating love we actually then are living in God's call and a happiness that we desire but we also know that we live in a world and lived in in the reality of hearts that are falling and so our freedom is compromised our ability to love is compromised by our accommodation to the world I'm listening to our own Egos and a reality of our own sin in our lives we know that we we we we know that in end in our honesty with ourselves our examination of conscience has we know that and the truth is that that that topper is the compromised approach to to love and enter freedom is exactly the path that leads us to a place that when somebody is speaking for God and God makes it abundantly clear to us that we are to respect the Dignity of his Creation in human life from conception until natural death or or to honor the Sabbath and to honor that the gift of Sunday is a day of rest and prayer and somebody somebody speaking for God comes back somebody can easily respond how is she imposing that upon me and taking my freedom away that is taking my freedom away it is the gift that God gave us order to live free and to live in self donating love which leads to happiness but the truth is it is compromised our fallen world are falling are falling characters and all that are compromised but we also that second person of the Trinity Jesus Christ who came into the world to restore all of that to restore our freedom in him and when our freedom is restored then we are able to give ourselves back in at self gift and see donating large and lead to happiness that is what we are called to do that's why I called to do and I suspect that that basketball players experiencing that right now I have no I have no idea directly I no direct connection with haven't seen anything by suspect what she is experiencing now is the depth of the desires in her heart that equals the desire of God that says give yourself away and you will be happy and truth is I don't know specifically what's going on in her life right now but I can tell you from walking with people and such that when we do say that when we accept that Restoration in Christ that gift of the holy spirit that leads us into all truth truth about God but also the truth about ourselves and we're honest about the compromised life that we are that we are living in and then accept restoration from him then can be renewed in our ability to love and we can live truly free and when it happens when it happens do not expect the world to Pat us on the back we should not expect that it's not happening the stuff that was written about this basketball player wasn't it was it was not overtly hostile or anything like that but it certainly didn't understand what she was doing and it's going to happen the exact same way for us may be hostile they made it they may just not understand they're certainly not going to say wow great job it's not happening but it will happen within our hearts and going to that depth of our hearts where we experienced renewed free I'm in Christ and renewed ability to laugh when we accept that restoration of our freedom in Jesus Christ when we accept that. Fication of our hearts we can respond to God's call to complete and total self giving and self donating love which will lead us to the happiness that both he and we desire
