my oldest niece Brianna graduates from high school this year which makes me feel really really old and as a graduation gift my parents and I are taking her to France in June not too shabby for a graduation gift and so I've been preparing for this trip I took a french lesson one of our parishioners learning some lingo learning some of the French culture I've been watching some travel shows and Rick Steves in the like doing some internet research I've been listening to the Les Miserables which is about 80 hours long to listen to so for the past few months if you see me driving I'm probably listening to Les Miz and I've been making reservations for trip we have tickets to go to the Eiffel Tower and we have our Museum passes for Paris now you can probably imagine my shock my disbelief because of this trip that we had planned then what I would see on Monday of this week you say I've been working on reserving a chapel in Notre Dame Cathedral to celebrate the Holy Mass with my family and so I was personally crushed when I turned on the news on Monday and saw everything that was unfolding and this experience somewhat mirrors my journey into the priesthood as well joy excitement anticipation only to be tempered by feelings of shock and disbelief that I would be assuming leadership in a damaged church church in crisis a church on fire but I find comfort in Psalm 118 the song that song as part of our Alleluia tonight the psalm that talks about Jesus in this way the stone which the builders rejected has become the Firestone this brothers and sisters is the constant story of our church the constant story of the Christian faith it's always a story of rising from the ashes this is where we find our joy this is where we find Hope the promise that comes from the resurrection of Jesus from the dead the promise that came to us through the cross this is the promise of Jesus and he gave it first to Peter the first pope he called Peter to himself and when Peter had answered rightly that he was the Christ Jesus said Teeter Upon This Rock I will build my church and the gates of the Netherworld shall not Prevail against it Jesus has conquered the Netherworld Jesus has defeated death itself so what should we fear the turd the church is not afraid I'm a little smoke and some fire we've been smoking it up in here all night haven't we we've been lighting things on fire this does not take us later in the week the French President promised to rebuild Notre Dame cathedral in 5 years some Skeptics say okay I'm not sure that's going to happen but if you say so they think it's going to take a little bit longer than that but even if they do pull it off in 5 years it won't be the fastest build project in history on Monday of that first Holy Week providentially the same day that Notre Dame burned Monday of Holy Week Lord Jesus went into the Temple of Jerusalem and he cleaned house and then you may remember what he said he said destroy this Temple and in three days I will rebuild it and people stopped at him to do you realize Jesus how long it took for us to build this Temple but the Apostle John gives us a little commentary and he says he wasn't talking about the temple in Jerusalem but the Temple of his body this is the story of Easter brothers and sisters rising from the ashes Jesus dying and Rising 3 days later play Zine from the dead the resurrection of his body and the extension of his body throughout time in the body of the church and tonight we have an exciting night we have new members of the church joining us for the first time and this is the Fulfillment of Jesus's promise that he would rebuild himself rebuild the church Rise From the Ashes we see that in the promise of our brothers and sisters joining us tonight in the church and they're joined by upward of 50,000 other new members in the United States alone tonight 50000 new members at least coming into the church tonight little perspective Target Field fits about 40,000 we have 50,000 new members coming into the church tonight the largest mega church in the United States has about four mm in a tendency every week and we have 50,000 throughout the United States coming into the church now undoubtedly others have left the church especially in this last year especially during times of crisis when they saw the church on fire and struggling but we were Joyce tonight that there is New Growth there is new that even in the midst of the crisis there are at least 50,000 new members coming in tonight and when we welcome these new members through the Sacrament of Confirmation we use a special oil called chrism chrism oil takes its name from Christ himself it anoints the person and makes them more like Christ in a sacrament way but the only thing we anoint with chrism in the church are really two things altars and church buildings when this church of All Saints was dead hated all chrism oil was spread all over the Altar and it was put on the walls of the church that's what Chris amoyal anoints alters and church buildings and we brothers and sisters are both of those things when we were anointed at our baptism with chrism and again at our confirmation with chrism we became an altar on which sacrifice could be made to God and we became those living stones of the church the church that extends throughout time and space the church is Christ's body and maybe you've experienced fear and uncertainty in joining or continuing to Worship in a damaged Church like I have but remember that before Notre Dame which literally means our lady was a cathedral before it was a building Notre Dame was a p our lady Notre Dame is the body of Jesus Christ The Bride of her savior so what do we do when the church is damaged we rebuild we do just what Jesus said destroy this Temple and I will rebuild it in three days Jesus said same thing to St Francis he said go Francis and rebuild my church for you see it is in Ruins and Saint Francis at first thought he meant a physical church but then he real Jesus was speaking to him about the mystical Body of Christ the church extended through persons and so he dedicated the rest of his life for building up that church so let's build that church brothers and sisters as we stake our lives on Jesus our savior who died and rose from the dead conquering death itself let us read build the church again with our worship and with our lives
