once again it's great to be back with all of you and this last winter I had the chance to go to the holy land with Father Nathan laliberte use a parishioner here and went to mount Transfiguration Mount Tabor and though the first time I went there was in seminary and it was a great experience being there we got lost on the way down and my class may be said when we are found the professor is really serious and said in my country they would be rejoicing because the lost have been found so I have this story in mind that I was going to preach to all the people on this pilgrimage yes I was getting ready to leave the Sacristy best polish Franciscan looked at me right in the eyes and he said you will not make anyone laugh I looked at father Nathan he said you can make him laugh a little bit what he put the fear of God into my heart he was reminding me that was a holy place and what had happened on Mount Tabor was serious and so I just told one little joke made people laugh and then he came and he was pacing back and forth through the math is beautiful the Transfiguration it is a fearful thing turn counter the Living God is a fearful thing joyful thing and there's a mix of the emotions that go along with encountering God in the resurrection and the people get a taste of that Peter James John they got a taste of it on Mount Tabor when people ask me what is Hospital Ministry like it is like the Mount of transfiguration is like Mount Tabor because in the hospital I encounter people images of great suffering Miss great challenges and what happens when people suffering when there's challenging things that happened The Masks Fall Away and who the person really is comes to 4 and it's it's beautiful it's also a fearful thing counter God through the sacraments and through the experiences at the hospital and I got to taste of this with my own grandfather this last January my grandfather I found out that his is illness B terminal of course since I'm the priest grandson they called me in right after that and my grandfather had a tough life he lost his dad when he was 2 years old call me into the room and he brought me close to him he got real you got real with me and the line that came out of his mouth he said father for being a father to me what is my grandpa want to hear throughout his life that he was a beloved Son we are made from Love that's what we're made for and he was sharing that with me and then we pray the rosary and he was radiant he was filled with the Holy Spirit any other encounters at the hospital like this one the other great story is a little baby was born 1 pound 1 oz they didn't think the little guy was going to make it so they called me and they said you baptized nice we baptize him and he ended up bouncing back 2 weeks later he pulled through now he's about 25 lb and he was on the front page of the Star Tribune he was in the hospital for 18 months was beautiful to see how God work through this child and this is Jesus Jesus is teaching his Apostles what life is really about I'll before when I've read this passage I was focused on Peter how Jesus is teaching Peter right just before this happens Jesus asked Peter who do you say that I am and Peter says you are the Christ Jesus says you are Peter and Upon This Rock I will build my church Peter is at the Heights feeling pretty good about himself and then Jesus reveals to him that he may suffer die and rise and what does Peter say God forbid you're not to suffer and then Jesus tells him get behind me Satan you are not thinking I just got things but as man does so then he takes them up the mountain and Reveals His glory he removes the scandal of the Cross that's what Pope Leo says it's a boy building up Peter Spirit again but Jesus wasn't just going up to Mount Tabor for Peter he was going up there for himself imagine you tell us that you must suffer dying rise one of your friends and what are you hoping for that they will walk with you in it what does Peter say nope not there yet Jesus experience loneliness in that moment loneliness and so what did he do when he encountered that loneliness this is Jesus this is the son of God this is son of man he went up to pray and he showed us the value of dependents notice what Jesus doesn't do he doesn't turn in on himself and fix himself he goes to the father now he didn't need fixing but he needed encouragement and what does he do we turn to the prophets and in Luke's gospel it's Unique because in Luke's gospel we hear about what Moses and Elijah were talking about with Jesus and it's the Exodus how did Moses experience The Exodus he led the people out of slavery into freedom he led them from freedom from pharaohs oppressive rule and the same with Elijah lead the people out of the worship of ball of the false idols any LED them away from that Queen and that King can't remember her name right now but let them into Freedom that wasn't easy for Moses was it easy for Elijah I know both of them suffering Italy the people that were following them would experience Freedom they had to suffer for the sake of freedom and they were encouraging Jesus and what were they saying it's worth it yes the people grumbled with Moses yes they wanted to turn back at times but Moses knew that it was worth it and yes Elijah they threatened his life and I threatened him with armies at one point I didn't want to continue living but he said yes to life and this is when Jesus begins to radiate Aziz relating this to Elijah and Moses and it says they stood together he stood with them he stood with Elijah and Moses he was not alone and of course where do we find Peter he's like me he's sleeping I'm still waking up he was sleeping and when does he come awake for the good part well Jesus is rated yes let's build three tenses stay here this is glorious and what is scripture say well he was speaking mobile we're still speaking iCloud before that but he did not know what he was saying while he was still speaking a Cub game and cast a shadow over them and they were frightened experience this in my own priesthood even and preaching sometimes the mystery is so deep he sees God's glory and he still not ready he wants to stay up on the mountain he wants to be in the tent he wants to be in the shade Jesus understands it and I'm sure as he looked back at Peter he laughed a little bit to himself Peter he's got this childlike faith Peter is each one of us but in Time Peter was made ready because he was stripped of his pride he was stripped of what the world thought of him because he wasn't as strong as he really thought he was and he ended up discovering that he was dependent on God dependent on the father and this is what life is all about we take up the fasting we take up the penances we take up almsgiving d'usse our life is transitory and Jesus was leading people not simply to an Earthly place but you're having our citizenship is in heaven we come from God he is giving us a soul he's giving us a body and our bodies are wasting away but what will remain is our soul and we'll get our bodies back but if we don't have that relationship with God right all the rest does not matter all the rest will fall the way and this is sometimes when we get caught and the danger of of Lent to now it should be challenging like I told the children sometimes we think okay I need the perfect fasting routine the perfect fitness program and the perfect planner I need I need someone to plan still all of these things straight then I will receive God what is that that's called self-reliance and it's a disease in our culture we have become autonomous through our media through the way we live our lives we need others we need God it's not just our project now we take up those things but who just the greatest hits the lure it's the Lord if we do take up our parents as we do take up our fasting and if we are faithful to prayer we will become transfigured what's within will be manifest to the world and I'll Transform others to so take out fasting take up almsgiving take out and we don't do it for others to do it for God and that's the last thing we've been building to this Ash Wednesday what was the scripture your father who sees you in secret will repay you do it for God in Temptation Mount Temptation last week man does not live on bread alone but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God and this week you are my beloved Son we need God we need the father and we open our hearts to him he will say to us what he said to Jesus you are my chosen one you are my beloved one and that will make us radiant
