in the first reading tonight from the book of Exodus we hear of that first Passover celebration in which Yahweh God would save his chosen the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and there are lots of symbols there are lots of traditions that are part of this Passover celebration and at the end of the reading we hear that God willed that this Passover would be a Perpetual institution something that would last and Israelites year after year to the present day with the Jewish people celebrate the Passover and in one of those Jewish Passover Traditions the youngest boy table the youngest son asks a series of questions to the Elder usually the grandfather the presider of the banquet and so tonight I thought we would have a bit of a reenactment so I searched through the church to find the youngest son the youngest boy who would be able to ask this first question of the provider and the lot fell on power glad Howard one of our liturgy team extraordinaires one of our lectors so Howard hit us that first question ma nishtana ha la lo has a miracle holiday Lowe's okay now in English Howard what makes this noise different from all other nights what makes this night different from all other nights this is what the youngest son always asks the provider that same question would have been asked by Jesus as a young boy when he would celebrate the Passover with his family his father and his mother perhaps even that same question would have been asked in the upper room with the 12 gathered around Jesus their rabbi maybe it was John the youngest in the group the asked this Ma nishtana at the beginning of the Passover but the celebration of the Passover was more than just a ritual it was more than just a bunch of symbol you see it meant something so deep to the Israelites that it touched their very identity you see the Passover is a Time remember the Passover is a time that we tell a story a story of God saving love God's love that reaches out his chosen people and saves them from slavery this question this celebration struck at the very core of who the Israel lights were and who the Jews are yeah it was like I said it was more than an explanation of food and symbols though it was that they would talk about the roast of fish of the Lamb they talk about the unleavened bread the bitter herbs that we hear about in the reading tonight from Exodus yet these symbols pointed to the fact that this was a free people appointed to the fact that they had a liberator that Yahweh himself had saved them had freed them and he did it through the blood a spotless lamb that blood that would be spread on the doorposts and a lentil that blood of the Lamb that would become the saving symbol of their Redemption brothers and sisters this night is different from all other nights for us Christians to this night stand for us it speaks to our identity in who Christ has made us through the new Passover and we remember with our Collective memory three mysteries we celebrate three mysteries on this night the 1st being the love of Jesus the second the institution of the Holy priesthood and the word mystery remembered on this night that saving Grist that Jesus would give us as a lasting symbol of his presence with us first that saving love that Jesus instituted it came through the washing of feet that will reenact here in just a few moments Jesus says that he loved his own in the world and he loved them to the and so how did he show this love he lowered himself he got on his knees and he gave his 12 this lasting sign this lasting symbol of his love he would wash their feet and tell them what I have done for you you must also do in that second mystery that we celebrate today in the Holy priesthood Christ himself at the last stop at the Last Supper and stands as that Eternal high priest he himself will be the one priest to reach out throughout all of history to continue saving his people and it's in my participation in his priesthood and for father Wilson that we are continually renewed and reconciled to the father that that Priestly Ministry of Jesus would continue to permeate our church throughout time and that third mystery that we celebrate in the Holy Eucharist St Paul writes about this tonight in our reading from First Corinthians that what has been handed on to us we must hand on to others just like that Ma nishtana that we hand on the traditions we hand on the saving mysteries of God and we do it through that blessed Eucharist that you Chris that was instituted in the upper room and now extends to us as that staving sacred meal of the new Passover what makes this night different and then all other nights God comes close to us the master becomes the servant the priest comes the victim the shepherd becomes a lamb and that blood of the Lamb God's own blood this time will save his people again
