the first night we focus on the extraordinary call and what we mean by that looking at the call of St Peter was that geez came in the midst of his ordinary life his profession as a fisherman and in the midst of his ordinary life Jesus Christ called them into the extraordinary Dua of being a disciple of Jesus he said those famous words and Hebrew lucky come follow me and I will make you Fishers of Men and that call this the same for us in our vocation regardless of what our vocation is that the call to follow Jesus Christ is not separated off for the priest or for the religious or for the deacons the call is for all of us to follow Jesus I guess you could say the call is for all and that rhymes so you know it's true okay I've said that over and over again so then the next it's on this extraordinary life we focus on the topic of repentance something so often misunderstood people think the church is this giant Guilt Trip especially as it surrounds the sacrament of reconciliation and what we did was we explored the notion of what is the heart of guilt guilt is to the is to the what pain is to the body pain is a signal that says there's something wrong here guilt as a signal that there is something wrong here and just as there are people who are fixated con pane there also people who are fixated on guilt but that is not the way of the church the way of the church is to Proclaim freedom from guilt by proclaiming the death and direction of Jesus the one who paid the price for you and I got to speak with the morning crowd the people could make it last night actually half the group that's I made it last night and then came this morning but after the morning Mass we met at the 8 a.m. and we talked a little bit more about this notion of Christ paying the debt because often sometimes we thing like maybe you had a wildlife in your twenties maybe last spring break was a little a little risque or something right and we think when some tragedy before you were like this is God getting back at me back at me for XYZ whatever it wants is that God is not sitting up there waiting to push the buttons on some Cosmic Karma machine to get you back because he took the guilt that you reserved and he laid it upon his son Jesus his son Jesus Paid a Debt that he didn't know because we owed a debt we could not pay so G just took the ransom was the ransom for us all that's why I've seen Paul and 1st Corinthians chapter 6 when he lays out his sexual ethics is sexual morality the frames in the loftiest phrases he can possibly say do you not know that your bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit and then goes on to say for you are not your own you are not your own you were bought with a price  and that price was the death and Resurrection action of Jesus  and if you right now or wearing a cross or crucifix around your neck that is more than a piece of jewelry that is quite simply a price tag that is what God believes you are worth but that's also on the other side of it it's in the ugliness of what sin does to our heart God doesn't pretend that sin doesn't exist he doesn't turn our sins into mistakes God feels the full force of our no to him but in the midst power no God still says yes to us and that's what the cross is  the cross the same that no matter how many times you walk away from me here I name for you a sign of contradiction a sign that says if you want happiness you got to be willing to embrace the cross I got to tell you something when I started to realize the depth of what the gospel really was that it wasn't just about Sundays that it wasn't just about living a certain play abiding by rules so many people in Catholicism reduce what it means to be Catholic to a list of things I need to believe in stop from the list of things I need to do and not do AKA morality and that's it and then we lose sight of what Pope Benedict called The Art of life or the power of the whole open the police and who Jesus is being his disciple and the community intermingle with one another that you can't live the moral life without the the holy spirit in your life you can't be virtuous in but you can never renounce in without understanding the doctrine of the Cross and the resurrection what's a brothers and sisters where do we go when we encounter the love of God the first thing we do is what St Peter did that's why these these readings I've carefully selected  carefully selected the readings and see Peter out on Virginia says put out into the deep and let it lay down your nets lower your nets for a catch how do they catch the fish Peter falls on his knees and he repents  can you can see how this line of repentance when you encounter absolute Holiness and are anything but holy what are we do we fall on our knees and repent but this is the good news  this is the good news we are repenting to a God who is love he's not going to use it against us have you ever told some secret of your life to someone and then they used it again snoo  I mean the patrail the sense of of loss of isolation of being attacked there's nothing more then speaking this word of Truth and vulnerability to someone and then they use it against you  but we know we can trust a god I love this way but first John puts it but love it it is not that we loved God first but rather he loved us I see when I go and I preach these missions often times you know I feel like I can kind of hear the inner hippie right Lego God is love God is love but this love is real concrete at CS Lewis says this is a love that is as hard as nails  but Pierce through the median nerve of one who how's it is a love that says right G kitchen has this line where he says my country right or wrong is the equivalent of saying my mother anchor sober who's right when I'm right I want to believe in a god who's right when I'm wrong otherwise that God looks a lot like me that's a part of this God is love sing is it takes this uprooting of our own selfish Twisted arrogant love that we call Pride the self-love  if you've ever met a drug addict watch with a drug addict in the midst of their addiction when they don't think they have a problem you know what true human arrogance is like without pretense or mask my brother was a drug addict addicted to crack cocaine and I and I can remember when he would walk into a house and we be having a Christmas party at all of a sudden he was like a living black hole every word that came out was destructive everything that was happy immediately got sad got depressed he just was biting with sarcasm and then when you told them to stop you would make some snide remark and just walk away it was destructive right because this is now we we often class it up  we surround our pride with pretty smiles and compliments but it does the same thing in the end it makes it all about me when brothers and sisters the grand is story of Our Lives as individuals your life 140 years here at this church  for the two thousand years of the Roman Catholic Church brothers and sisters we are not the center of our own story when if you think that your story is only as big as you can make it and it's pretty small God wants to enter into your story any wants to radically alter it into something that won't just  that's not just attached to a cause but is attached to an eternity who wants to live on mediocre life what young man or young woman dreams of mediocrity which one of you in turn marriages when you were starting outside I hope we don't really talk to each other when we lay down in bed it's like brothers on a hotel bed right I got that wine between you don't you dare cross right  that when you're sleeping that's a totally different thing you can't have anyone touch me when I'm sleeping right that was weird when we look at our faith we cannot have mediocre Faith mediocre fake this one that puts God in a measurable box and says he I feel safe putting them out only when we need something what is bigger than that anyone's bigger things for your life  then just to be your emergency line he'll start there  but it cannot God wants to be your all in all San Agustin said it best  you have made us for yourself O Lord and our hearts are restless until they rest in you and if rest in anything that is not the Eternal on Mighty God guess what  Patel  how is the human heart resting if the what is made for an eternity with God will become Latin K-PAX days we have the capacity for God  the Book of Ecclesiastes set for I have placed within the heart of man if we have this eternal longing and we settle for temporal things that's l that's the Eternal frustration of never being satisfied  I'm sure we can chase after a million counterfeits  but it will never be enough and you and I know this and will never be enough but our God is in the business of transformation amen I think God wants to transform your life tonight not tomorrow not next week I think God wants to transform your marriages tonight  tonight  if you're willing to put aside the turn the anger the send the frustration if you're willing to say to your spouse to your children if you're willing to look up to the crucifix right now and said God I have Percy did in this path and I want to go no longer I need you to take me off the path and put me on the right path I need you to take me off of where I've strayed and I need you to Place me in your righteousness I need to be with you. I'm going to say two things to this  number one do you need Faith to do that faith and not just yourself you got yourself into this mess right it's like Homer Simpson trying to pull his stuck hands and feet in the tar pit what was his own face that was an analogy we use last night that's not weird from the outside just a teacher  he's our savior  because we need save  and the beautiful thing is it does it I want to tell you the story of a woman of a town called Samaria or a country called Samaria the Samaritans were country rate in the middle of Judah was down bottom gal are the Gentiles was up north the the Jordan River ran along the east side right I said this before and Jews so hated Samaritans because they were play we were semi Israelites angle with five foreign Nations at the Assyrian army seven hundred years earlier had repopulated the area with the women stay behind the men were shipped off into slavery and they brought men from five different countries and resettled them and they brought their five National gods and those gods were called male Baals if you're taking notes but we can pronounce it but all or bail but it literally means in the Hebrew society if you are a slave woman and you buried your master you never called in my husband you called him my bail my master and it was a prophecy my favorite book of the Bible the Old Testament the book of Hosea where God says I will take away the names of the bales from your mouth no longer will you to me my bail but you will say to me the Lord your God my husband and I will marry you I will espouse you to me people in Jesus's time with cross the River Jordan in order to go north or south rather than just cut through they would add some times at the 13 Mile what's their Journey on foot rather than let the power behind the opening sentence of this  inverse for a certain verse when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptized more disciples than John parentheses other Jesus himself did not baptize only his disciples he left Judea and parted departed again to Galilee and instead of going around the Jordan River on the east side and then coming back and says this verse for he had to pass true Samaria  that's not true he could have gone around  but love compelled him otherwise he had and he was going to have an encounter with a woman who is despised and rejected from her own people from her own group of women from our own town jeans wooden counter what's called The Samaritan woman at the well the Samaritans their hybrid religion now consisted of getting rid of all of the prophets and wisdom literature cuz all the what's condemned the Samaritan so they're like you're not a part of the Bible anymore the first five books and in the first five books every major patriarchy LOL  and here comes Jesus so it came to a city of Samaria called soccer near the field that Jacob gave to what's on Joseph Jacobs Well was there and so Jesus we read as he was with his journey sat down beside the well it was about the sixth hour that's noon don't know if you know about desert climates but a new and it's pretty hot so you never ever ever ever ever get water from the well at noon as a woman you go and gather with the other turn up the town at 6 a.m. the first hour of the day you gather your water for the chores of the day and you take it home you talk with the other women you socialize and you won't walk gather and this one was not a part not allowed to be a part of that group  became a woman of Samaria  to draw louder Jesus said to her give me a drink for the disciples are gone away into the city to buy food now how many of you have ever bought food for a group of people right now I have four can my family plus my wife and me that six people when I go you know who goes just me Jesus can people food men's but I think what he's doing is he's arranging a Divine appointment  that here is my way  coming back to his people Israel that have been cut off for 750 years and he's at a well  the bride is coming for his bride  engage in this conversation how is it that you would you ask of me a woman of Samaria for a drink for juice have known planes of Samaritans Jesus said to her if you knew the gift of God and who it is same to you give me a drink you would have asked him and he would have given you living water water that's running right well louder he was referring to the water of everlasting life the Holy Spirit she thought he was talking about a spring or a river so you have nothing to draw with in the well is deep where you going to get that living water she's on the natural plane Jesus is directly addressing her shame her guilt her situation in life in order to give her the gospel are you turn off father Jacob who gave us this well and drank from it himself and his sons and his cattle Jesus said him everyone who drinks water from this well will thirst again but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give them will never thirst the water that I will give him  will be coming him a spring of water welling up to eternal life the woman said to him give me this water always  but I may not thirst no come here to draw he spoke directly to her shame she was ashamed of what doing that walk of shame from her home that well probably why the town's folk snickered and laughed at her  she won at noon knowing for sure that no one would be present there does she wouldn't have to deal with their remarks Jesus said to her night you can understand here is a woman that's now being treated like a human being he's having a conversation with her is that ignoring or like everyone else in the town I bet you she's thinking at this moment I don't want this to end but at the same time if he found out who I really was  didn't treat me like everyone else in our lives we have these two things do you love and not known to be known and not loved to be loved but not known as superficial and it's not enough to stake your life on to be loved but not known let's to superficial but to be known but not loved truly that is our greatest nightmare for someone to say I know the real you how could I ever love you  here is this woman who is talking to a man who had to go to Samaria who had to send away his Twelve Apostles to get dinner for 13 people many sets are go call your husband and come here you can see the lump in her throat I have no husband Jesus said to her you're right in saying I have no husband so usually she's playing coy Vince and the one you're with now is not your husband  you have had five husbands and the one you're with now is not your husband and let me break off the rest of the story Jesus Christ revealed to her in that single moment that he knew her he knew her down to the soles of her feet and he didn't wagon fact he revealed in that moment that he knew her story the whole time  who knew her story the whole time so then things start escalate and she begins talking to him about her religious Faith certainly worship here to Worship in Jerusalem and he says woman believe me the hour is coming when either on this mouth coin Jerusalem worship the father  are the hours coming in now is when true worshippers will worship the father in spirit and in truth  the woman said I know the Messiah is coming who is called the Christ when he comes he will show us all things Jesus said to her I listen to this Jesus said to her do this in the New Testament  I the one you are speaking with and he you know what she does she puts down her jog she puts down her bucket and she runs into the town she proclaims Jesus as the Messiah to a people who hated her who snickered at our who mocked her this quote-unquote Center best person on the outside on the outskirts this person who we all would have disregarded in fact her whole society disregarded her Christ turn a new dignity and he gave her a new job and that job  maybe from Arch Center she became the arch AngelList she ran to her town and said this  come and meet the woman or beat the man he told me all that I ever did and said someone that Samaritans came him they asked him to stay with him he stay there for 2 days and many more believed because of his word they said to the woman it is no longer because of your words play Believe for we have heard for ourselves and we know indeed that this is the savior of the world brothers and sisters  Catholic identity is not enough  Sunday's is not enough  being a good little citizen Christian whatever is not stop  if you're in love you want to share it I didn't hide the fact that I was in good that I got engaged to my wife Shannon I had like a thousand photos on Facebook in about 2 seconds  and this is the deal about our Catholic Christian faith we have to be able to realized called you and called me not just to be disciples but to be  missionaries raise your hands if you lost an adult son or daughter or teenage son or daughter who's left the church if you've had a son or daughter's left the church okay keep them up people I want to see okay keep your hands raised how many if you would do anything to win them back right here's the deal  what are we willing to do in this church to make sure that doesn't happen to other sons and daughters this is where it gets really uncomfortable because if I'm only going to serve in the way I Define it in the way that's comfortable for me I'll never have the faith of the Samaritan woman you'll be carrying your water bucket around with you the rest of your life clinging onto this world instead of letting go and letting the Living Water of Jesus Christ change everything  drop your buckets surrender other people's view of you and go out into the world our job is not to be quasi priests  the lady's job is to be Angelus to sanctify the temporal order in fact the word masks that we are going to enjoy right now  the word mass comes from the Latin word Missa which comes from the phrase of the end of in the Latin Mass eat a wing csgo you are sent so the whole thing about coming mass is so that we can leave so that we can go out into a world that is cold both figuratively and literally cuz you guys live in Minnesota crazy to bring the light of Jesus Christ the fire of the holy spirit because come on This Woman's life wish when someone showed her love  who needs to be shown love that you know today or are we not going to laoura selves to be inconvenienced by the gospel telling you it's an extraordinary Mission and you will see a make things happen  when you surrender and let the Holy Spirit be Unleashed let me pray for you in the name of the father son Jesus prepare my heart to meet you in the Eucharist speak your word of truth to me for the turn on the gospel may I hear it with open heart with an open mind and with hands ready to work for the kingdom may I be a Herald and not stick in the mud Biba smiling sink filled with the joy of the gospel and not someone who's Queens ready to be offended may I be a person of mission of forgiveness of Love who will go out to the Samaritan woman of art women of our own day  Jesus love you I need you come Holy Spirit
