Colorado  Amion Amion Amion now am I on now okay  how about now already what about now just getting okay  so like I said I want to how come everyone who's in a noob today welcome to the party I don't know what brought you here but I'm sure they're paying you a lot of money to be here so that thank you man look at that video I am such a nerd I didn't even tuck in my shirt so I'm having I'm having what they call a I don't have bad hair days you know that I have I only have Good Hair Days I have bad hair years so I'm going through one of those spells which is really tragic my wife is so trendy and beautiful and then she got stuck with this and I don't you know I remember song with one friend at a parish I just started working there and me and her same friends you told me to she converted and she went through RCI ones tell me about that experience and then she said but you know what was harder than becoming Catholic getting married in really why's that and she's this beautiful southern belle right thick southern accent from the from the foothills of the Appalachians and she said we was getting married I was like really why's that and she just goes honeymoon night like I just looked over at him I got so sad and I'm like I'm stuck with this boy there Groves  can you answer so what we want to do today Michael Gormley hashtag extraordinary and what we're going to do today is we're going to focus on everyone's favorite thing in the Catholic Church built right I don't know about you but when I was growing up my mother who is Irish could wield Catholic guilt like a ninja okay I remember this is a true story one time when I was probably 12 years old my mother please said these words to me are you telling me that Jesus Christ beaten and bloodied could carry his cross open Hill for half a mile and die for your sins and you can't even make your bed in the Plus on another life I mean that is Catholic Guild like you wouldn't believe play I'm sorry I'll try better  night instead I just learned it after I learned scripture bed I said oh mother weep not for Christ but rather for yourself and for your children Santa Claus funny so one of the things that we end up doing when we talk about guilt and all this stuff is we have to frame it within its proper context I was trying to give people this handy little sayings God the way we should view guilt is simply this guilt is to the so lord of the conscience what pain is to the body pain is not the problem pain is an indicator that there's a problem right if you put your hand on the burning stove  that the signal going to your brain is is pain it's very painful but if you didn't receive that signal if your nerve endings were dad and your brain couldn't process that signal you could be in a lot bigger problem right I had a friend of a dead nerve endings in his foot and he actually pulled a tendon in his foot during a rugby match and kept playing and he shredded it and wasn't able to play ever again right it's so this notion that guilt is to the soul or the conscience were paying into the body means that it is a signal that something is wrong or fixated on pain so too there are people who are fixated on guilt some of them are screw Cliff's people scrupulosity sees sin where there is no sin couple of examples man who is struggling with temptation last goes to the priests and confesses lust in the priest through an anointed moment begins ask questions and realizes this this isn't this isn't this is a temptation to sin and he said father how do you know when he says the distinguishing Mark between sins like like criticizing somebody says you know the classical definition of why people would say it in over sometimes in Catholic church we have a like a euphemistic way of tiptoeing around the skin play says did you entertain lustful thoughts and the way you know it is did you entertain them or did they entertain you once they start entertaining you that's when it goes beyond sin goes beyond Temptation and Indus in the other thing is my pastor reached out to me one time and we're going to create a resource to help Catholics go to confession because he fine set there are actually a large group of people who will go to confession to multiple priests in multiple parishes in one week and even though they'll go one day after the next they'll confess it's been a week since my last confession meaning my last time I was here at your church and they are so racked with but they can't find their way out they can't find in fact their spiritual life is defined by this by this guilt and oftentimes a third way that you find people I'm kind of pinned down by this element of scrupulosity whatever is when they confess the same sin that's already been forgiven over friend over and over and over and when Jesus Christ wants to do I love the words of Pope Francis where he says though we might grow weary of confessing the same send our heavenly father never grows weary of forgiving us  and we need to understand something absolutely fundamental about our Catholic faith before can ever proceed into the confessional yesterday was focused on prayer today is not going to be focused on guilt it's going to be focus on repentance yesterday I said is Catholics for many of us or experience was we were never really taught how to pray only how to repeat right when I said that no I was in L dear so this this notion of turning inward having a personal prayer life being converted seeking Christ everyday but there's another thing that I've learned over the years especially with talking with my pastor about him out how to help people make better confessions it says Catholics often we were never really taught how to repent how to make a good confession and part of that good confession is repentance but we never were really hot what it was and I remember when I discovered catechism of the Catholic church it's in the second part II Section that deals with the sacraments  when you look under the sacrament of penance confession can you just read this one section called if you write notes this one section to hit this one section called in tearing your pants and it is honestly it is what's the most if you can read it prayerfully one of the most beautiful sections of the catechism on interior Penance and the second part which is on name the sacraments and the second section which is on the seven sacraments you scroll down scroll apparently readings on a web page I read the catechism but you go to the park on the sacrament of reconciliation you go to Interior Penance and you will reset so I literally just read it to my pair of Staff as it election during Lent I read Snippets from it and one of the maintenance workers started crying  cuz it was just things simple beautiful things about what it mean I have sorrow for your sins and why we should have sorrow for our sins because I think for many of us we think God our heavenly father disappointed in us right in a lot of places and that wasn't a bragger I'm so popular Syrian says no matter where they're from or what age they're in is they know what the Catholic Church teaches they know what especially about Behavior they know that they failed to live up to that and so they feel that God the Father his when I call fundamental stance towards me is Disappointment the disappointed father and who did sociology and he talked about what he calls the father wound how that reverberates throughout the lives of their children and it also applies to women but it's more pronounced in men right and this father wound when a son or daughter perceives that the father their father is fundamentally disappointed with them and said there are commonly three reactions and you can write examine your nose through 3 reactions that we take in relation to a Heavenly Father we pull lightfully avoid  ripe wife we avoid what does that mean we might go I think skipping but we're not excited  you might send a birthday card to make the phone call  but you don't want to but you do it because you're not a write you politefully avoid and what do you do after Thanksgiving I don't know if this describes you but you walk out of Thanksgiving dinner you're going to shut the door get back in your car go Hotel go to the airplane you shut the door  it's over right I don't know if it's election season has contributed to that everyone at off life is like I survived but I still survived my father is disappointed in me he's so my dad and I'm going to be polite but I know that doesn't give me life I'm going to avoid it the other one is the Hostile rejector which summarize you don't want me fine I don't want you you don't want me fine I don't want you young man from Korea chosen career path is Father didn't approve of  they bought it had every 5 seconds so we ended up leaving Korea for the United States of America didn't speak a word of English didn't know a single person in America but that's what it took listen to get away from his father he rejected his father cuz his father had rejected him  I met this man who moved to America I met his son in college never knew his grandfather grandfather died never reconciled to his son you don't want me  I don't want you at the house I'll reject and last is probably the most common it's the good enough earner  if my father is disappointed in me well dang it I'm going to pick myself up on the boots and I'm going to earn my father's love I'm going to go to the college my father wants I'm going to pursue the major my father once I'm going to go get married to the person my father going to name my kids  what my father wants not the first time I had ever done this little Spiel was that my own church which is turned to do a parish mission for your own church right cuz a prophet is not without honor except in his own home right I didn't know this at the time I would find out 6 months later Backstreet standing in the cry room so she could be alone breaks down Falls underneath sobbing uncontrollably cuz I literally kicked off the major moments of her life in her relationship with her dad she came to me 6 months later  Porter heart out to me her husband had become Catholic under one of my programs and so we got to know each other a little bit you feel comfortable finally coming to me when she said what do I do I said will tell me and she says I made my kids I went to the college all he ever does is praise younger sisters you know what I did I went back even though I had a full-time job a kid and a new husband I went back and read majored her major so I could win his affection again  I said and did to get it and she's like it seems like it's just around the corner if I could do enough finally she said what should I do when I looked at her and then I'm going to say the same thing to you that I said to her it's time to down your idols  you worship and long for your father's approval you define your whole existence and make all sacrifices to the idol worship not necessarily of your father but of his approval that is always elusive  stop worshipping Sushi did  she did she stopped worshipping and desperately Desiring her father's approval because she received in a unique time in her life for Heavenly father's approval one for her by the death and resurrection of Jesus and she experienced that love  so I see you're 3 months after thinking I gave her awesome advice I said how's it going she said it is terrible terrible  what's the me Potter's House and it's just every step of the way why is it so bad if I said I really nervous so I do what I always do right look over the shoulder realize no one else's they realize I'm the only adult in the room and then I said to her it be awkward if I call their father right now and then I said to her because your father is used to being worship and you taking that worship away got to let these chips fall where they make you not rude you're not sinful you're not angry at all  I forgive them because I know that my heavenly father is where my identity is  six months later I saw her and she said it's like night and day difference I said what happened she said I have the courage to confront them like okay tell me and she said well if God might Heavenly Father is the source of my identity and my approval then I could actually say the words that I needed to say I could speak the words and peacefully to him and let the chips fall where they may because no longer was I afraid of saying the truth out of fear that he would turn away and give me his approval  he asked for my forgiveness  he asked for my forgiveness and brothers and sisters in our lives if you continue your heavenly father fundamentally is being disappointed in you  then you might be a polite avoider you'll come to Mass what month once a year Christmas and Easter when you feel the duty that you have to respond to and what do you do when you leave I need the father how are you been here why are people wearing red it's great  but why do they do they feel right there okay I need some God in my life but I'm going to keep them at our play right maybe this describes you maybe you say that we need God in our lives but you don't keep them at arm's length and I just want to let you know respectful arms Lang is the most disrespectful thing you can do to God  because God wants to be with you be United to you  he is in love can you and you like me to keep you over here how disrespectful can that be  what you doing that to your spouse I love you sleeping on the couch look at our Catholic faith through this lens of the polite of order what God wants to do is he wants to shut so this describes you God needs you to let him break down this dividing wall of hostility and let him in your life your prayer needs to be father show me you don't hate me show me you're not disappointed it because I'm being polite but I think it's a mask because I'm really afraid of what it means truth and if you have self-knowledge that's a way in but if we deceive ourselves and brothers and sisters more than anything else if you want to write down notes I want you to write down this the good play the perfect image of the Gospel  the image of the Gospel when do the gospel play it's a perfect image of the Gospel is because it shows is number one in order to have salvation our own efforts will ultimately damn Us number to we will constantly fool ourselves into thinking we are The Originators of our own salvation and number three to be saved it takes someone outside the damnation in order to reach into the muck and the mire of our lives and pull us out I have to say this is for so many of us the good enough earner is how we function in our day-to-day relationship with God we believe that if I enough Rosary say enough litanies do enough 9-day Novena attend mass at have perfect attendance at end even clean mats  then I will earn my father's approval  and here's the sad thing most can accumulate thousands of daily masses Eucharistic adoration good works we can look up on our relationship with God and here's the sad thing we don't really care about heaven we say Okay God you owe me and then what we do is we run into things like how come my marriage is broken how come my kids don't like me how come things are falling apart how come I lost my job and blame God and we say that since I come on let's be honest we all said something along these lines Why me I've been so good I have a friend who miscarried repeatedly there's another person the beautiful family good good what does another person is a meth addict who neglects our children  just keep turning out kid after kid and and one day I found myself praying Jesus come on Six Sisters terrible things good people who are so good why aren't you it's as if we have a mercenary heart the final purification Saints tell us  isn't that secret most inner desire of the human heart to be happy that wind Twisted can use pause to make me happy  to use God to make me happy what if you were to give that away  what if just say Jesus  All I Want Is You  All I Want Is You  all I want is you and you alone Thomas heart fish are not dissatisfied with water but we are with everything that defines us meaning purpose meaning that is even greater than ourselves no other animal worries about that  but what if our heavenly father we think is disappointed in us how do we find the remedy that's the polite avoidance the Hostile rejecting and the good enough earning how do I know that my heavenly father not only loves me but he approves of me and the hanging from the ceiling of this church we see it so many times as Catholics right you look up at the cross and crucifix you see the Corpus on the cross you see the body of Jesus do you like that sure okay whatever Brazil time across really quickly reality is the death of Jesus Christ is proof that God is fundamentally  for you and not against you but it is shame to the front board to demonstrate the answer to my homework right I will get 10 points what's a credit I ended up passing that class because every single day I went up to that bored and humiliated myself I'm going to write out all the answer to the proofs and he put there and he would just go  Kristen Gormley  how did you get number 2 produce every time I'm so happy angle of this triangle Spencer gone  every one of the class did what you just did was horrible and I would turn in tests and he would turn it was just filled with red ink and he would say if you change them to the right answer I'll give you half credit I was looking good you know what he didn't do he didn't take that piece of paper and look at me and go  you have sinned against geometry and again right because he actually knew that I was trying but failing right no I was trying I was putting forth effort it was something there I blame his teaching there was something there that was preventing my understanding of this now I mistake as a lack of so what I did was I gave that knowledge I went back I redid the test and I got the credit right  put him out to the sea with the politician in front with all the ball a microphones in the wife sanding you know six feet behind them with the big glasses the Jackie O glasses because she's hiding the fact that she's been bawling her eyes out for 3 days because she discovered her husband's mistakes  write me say this over and over again I would like to apologize next to my family into my constituents I've made  over these last four years several mistakes and you're sitting at home watching TV I mean I don't think of any particular politician but you hear this in your life  4 years who made the same mistake plane tickets to make a mistake like I don't know what to call it is but a mistake doesn't seem like a treats what happened with the copper gravity why because I mistake as a lack of knowledge but a sin means you knew it was wrong you knew it would hurt the other person but you chose do it anyway see that hurts your kids doing something or those are you We're Young have you ever been caught doing something  and your moms or dads like yelling at you and your like love I'm sorry and if I one word all combines I am sorry or I'm sorry sorry sorry meme sorry I got caught no matter if your kid looked at you and said you know what Mom you're right  it was wrong  I knew it was wrong and I did it anyway and I'm sorry that's a totally different repentance than I'm sorry it's so when we see him from this perspective this is how we need to wrap everything up with a nice and beautiful boat Jesus Christ died for your sins you've heard that a million times let me put this in perspective scripture says he who knew no sin became sin  he who knew no sin became sin  well I don't even know all that entails but I do know this the one thing that to me from God my heavenly father is my sin and God the son took my sin didn't have to he wasn't compelled to  it shows it when he was staring in the garden the night before he was he died he gazed out and saw all of us here scripture says he despised The Shame of the Cross often times we look at Jesus often he's this lily-white European dude who's just really going to CrossFit no pun intended and Jesus's they're threatening to see these symbols right so often  but the reality is sacred scripture in the Hebrew says he despised The Shame of the Cross did you know that  he despised The Shame of the Cross but but for the sake of the joy that lay before him he embrace it one of my he's a little boy falling and then Cuts back and forth to Jesus falling under the weight of the and she runs up and she's like my pulling my boy and she just wants to love him and hug him in what any mother would do in that case what any father would do you just want to take the pain away and whatever is suffering person would do with a just going to get rid of that pain right that's an console me Comfort me but he had a mission can you didn't even Embrace his mother remember what he did he wrapped his arms around that crossbeam and he said seen mother how I make all things new I stood up without hugging her without letting her hug him because he had a save that laid before him and he had to endure the shame and the pain and the ultimate suffering of the Cross because he wanted that Joyce to be before him for all liter do you know what that Joy is  that joy is you here now being free from the tyranny of deaths in the devil whatever darkness is in your life your habits of thought all of these things the wounds that you've received from other people Jesus wants to bring freedom into your life right now he wants to take the sin that you have Define you whether it's a sin you committed or is send someone else committed against you that now you cannot forgive  see what's make the wounds the labels the habits the attitudes the darkness the hurt and he doesn't just want to pretend like it does exist that's what we do when we want to get by he wants to take all of that and pull it into him with his very self so that when it stretches out his arms on that cross like you did two thousand years ago that no longer defines you not your sin not your shame luminous not your Brokenness by his stripes we are healed fur God placed upon him  the guilt of us all  the brothers and sisters this is what I want you to know one thing or you go to confession before you ask for forgiveness know this we would never confess  the worst part about our life someone who is going to rub our face in it that's why before Jesus ever told us before we for the church ever gave us the sacrament of reconciliation he preached us the mercy that waits for us  why would we ever confess our sins you think about it this is why I'm awful person right it's not normal what is a good  I think Luke 18 there's the story of the rich young man that comes up to Christ and he comes up to him and he says Jesus good teacher what do I have to do to be saved and Jinx just keep the Commandments and he says all these I have kept from my youth what does that mean I'm a good person immoral Jesus play there's one thing that you lack right Jesus knows that he's the Rich Young Ruler that's what Luke's cost will calls them Pecos ring to the idolatry at the sure of his heart and says go sell all you have give to make that skrilla it did it for the money  you know the story is so funny because it says is a short little guy and has to climb a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus why is that important because no one in the town would let him come near no one made for him so he had to climb a tree undignifying self in order to see Jesus passing by and what happened Jesus walked into the town walk to Raynham meant he was probably impoverishing himself by doing this  when Jesus says now and salvation come to this house for this man to was the son of Abraham and I want to conclude on this note and I need you to hear me  Jesus Christ up ended the world system  the world system I got to be good enough before I come to God that's the that's the system of every Temple of every Heathen deity be good enough moral enough or pure enough to go pay this money and I'll do do this sacrifice do all this stuff and then you'll be moral enough to come into the presence of God Jesus so that system to us today you will never be good enough you will never be moral enough you will never be pure enough  until you first come into my presence  so many of us are postponing our following them Jesus Christ because we think we're not turn off we think Dad is disappointed in Jesus Christ the Incarnation the crucifixion above all and his resurrection are fundamentally feuding that lie  God is not waiting for you to change your life in order for you to have an encounter with him God wants to have an encounter with you that will change your life  that's the order of the Gospel pesach Zacchaeus and a change will demand everything to be sacrifice to them you will be filled with anxiety and if you would taint it if you become the richest the best the smartest of whatever you will now be filled with anxiety to try to keep it no thing can Define you know it's success can Define you not even a person here in this room can Define you your spouse is not your God they can never ask that of you  Jesus Christ died to give you a new name so what is turn and repent  more than just mistakes let us get rid of our sins and find Freedom amen  because I'm telling you  you can do the Catholic dance  wasn't Father for I have sinned drove 36 in a 35 told my wife yes that dress does look good on you I slaughtered a family of four I also  play the the the runway of the of the little ones right I tell people this what time you can do that sure but here's my here's my encouragement to you start with the biggest sins in your life  find Freedom go to the sacrament and let the fathers Mercy let the death and
