last Sunday we celebrated the baptism of Jesus and John refers to that in the gospel today he said that he was told by the one who had commissioned him baptize that when he was baptized in the one to whom the Holy Spirit was made visible and came down and rested upon that person he was the Messiah he was the son of God and show today John the testifies that he truly is the son of God well today we have a follow-up or gospel begins today where John the Baptist again is down at the River Jordan baptizing and he's preaching and he sees Jesus coming any points about to the people he said Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world and everybody looked well you know to us the term Lamb of God is a familiar term we grew up hearing and that Jesus is the Lamb of God but to the people at the time of John the Baptist that must have been strange for them why did John the Baptist point out Jesus and say Behold the Lamb of God why didn't you say look here comes Jesus the son of Mary and Joseph or look here comes pictures of Son of God he said Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world will John the Baptist was the herald he was the one that was going to introduce Christ to the people he was going to witness to the people that this was truly the Messiah and that he came to baptize with water but that Jesus said come to baptize with the spirits and show refers to scripture because Jesus is the Fulfillment of the scripture and there's countless of accounts in the Old Testament were the savior of the world is referred to as the Lamb of God John must have been processing all of those when he called Jesus the Lamb of God not one of the favorite stories might one of my favorite stories anyway about is in the second book of Samuel we should read scripture more often scriptures full of beautiful stories and in the second book of Samuel we have a story about two man that lived in the same town one was a very wealthy man and the other was a very poor man the wealthy man had more sheep and lambs and he could count but the poor man he had one tiny little lamb but the family loved that little lamb in fact the children were told in Samuel that they would bring them to the table when they would eat and we're told that they even taught the little lamb how to drink out of a cup he was part of their family he was loved dearly well Nathaniel tells King David that one day a well a man or a wealthy a very prestigious person comes to town to visit the wealthy man and the man wants to put on his face and he wants a little unblemish lamb and rather than use one of his own he sends his servants to the poor man's house and they take his little lamb and the sacrifices for the meal well John must have been thinking about Jesus as the Lamb of God he's a Little Lamb with loved was showing affection Jesus was loved and we show him affection and so that it had to be Paramount in the mind of John the Baptist and I'm sure he also Woodruff put it on the words in the book of Exodus when God commanded Moses that after he God freed them and let them out of slavery and they were in the desert God commanded Moses that from this day forward twice a day you will sacrifice a one-year-old unblemished Lamb on the altar of sacrifice 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening and from then on every single day A Little Lamb sacrificed on the altar one in the morning and one in the evening and it would they were sacrificed in atonement for the sins of humans they paid price what up John the Baptist is putting out Jesus he said Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world Jesus is the Lamb who will not only be sacrificed he will not only atone for our sins but he will take them away he will take them on himself and suffer and die for our sins just as the little lambs were sacrificed in atonement for the Friends of the people of the time there's other wonderful scripture readings and Isaiah 53 he talks about the one who will come the savior of the world and they said he will come like a lamb Meek and Mild and he will be slaughtered and will not say a word Jesus never said a word at his trial during his passion and crucifixion Jeremiah talks about a little lamb and he says I didn't know that it was me that they had turned on why did they turn on me why did they show me a Little Lamb and show throughout the Old Testament we have numerous sightings of of the term lamb in connection with the savior and it does what it deals with affection and love and it also deals with sacrifice and suffering those are the two themes of the lamb in the Old Testament but then we come to the New Testament and we come to the Book of Revelation that was written by St John John the Evangelist and when he wrote the Revelation do you know that the term Lamb of God is used 28 times in the Book of Revelation referring to God the same as Jesus our savior of the world 28 * and in Revelation 5 we we have this beautiful image this Vision that John had about a throne any sit on that throne with seeded the lamb and around that lamb was a multitude of people and they were singing and praising to the lamb that was on the throne where are the the lamb who was slain let us bring him righteousness and power and might and glory and honor and all the people said amen June 5th chapter of Revelation Ed Schultz now we have another image of the Lamb of God triumphant and Victorious the one who suffered and offered himself on the cross and then gave us in very self to nourish us nurture us to bring us to Eternal salvation Jesus the lamb when Jesus was nailed to the cross all of the sins of the world all the sins of the past all the sins of the present all the sins that would ever be committed where laid on his shoulders and he died for all the sins of mankind my shins our sins Jesus died for them and at the deepest this point in history when the cruelty of humans came out and we nailed the very Son of God to the cross all it took was a handful of soldiers and a few sharp nails but we're the ones that nailed him to the cross and when all of this cruelty was placed upon Jesus and he died God returned that behavior with love Jesus said father forgive them they don't know what they're doing we don't know how painful our sins are to God and yet she continues to forgive us he continues to love us and so when we celebrate the lamb the Lamb of God which we do at every mass and it's only once during the mass when we refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God and that is just before we receive him into our very bodies hold up the bread in the wine we say Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world and then we add blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb that's the New Testament part of the Old Testament is a sacrifice and the suffering and the death but Jesus rose from the dead and we hear about that in Revelation where are the is the Lamb who is because now he has the power and might and glory and honor I was father in a bus and so when we receive Jesus let us always remember the suffering and the sacrifice and the love and affection that we have for him but let us also celebrate because we are invited to the supper of the Lamb do I hope from now on every time it Mash when you hear those words Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world and everybody looks and then are we who are called to the supper of that lamb
