so here we are Jesus making his first public appearance you might say of the Gospels he comes to his cousin and forbear John the Baptist seeking baptism Jesus being baptized presents a bit of a theological quandary for us those who are coming to John for baptism at the time we're doing so as an act of seeking to change their lives to become closer to God for us baptism is how we come into the family of God we are free from the  of original sin now Jesus Is Like Us in all things but sin and has no need of repentance and he is only begotten son of God he's already a part of God's family John recognizes this quandary when he protests and says it is I who need baptism from you so what's this all about this is the last Sunday of the Christmas season liturgically our attention has been on the Mist of God coming Among Us taking upon himself our human nature God's greatness revealed in the infant to Mary Joseph Shepherds the Magi the Feast of the baptism of the Lord is a bridge of sorts a reminder as we leave the Christmas season that it is just the beginning of the story Christ came into the world for something more than Bethlehem is baptism is a public revelation of his identity this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased call the question why would Jesus need baptism well the truth is his baptism wasn't about what he needed was about who he is his identity Jesus is the beloved Son of God who came into the world to call Sinners to repentance and to right relationship with God he's Our Redeemer who took upon himself the sins of everyone and shattered the whole that our Sinful Nature has and he did this when as one without sin accepted death on the cross we cannot look at the infant in the manger Andover the crucified and Risen Savior Jesus baptism is also about our identity I'd invite you to listen again to the prayer for Mass this morning Almighty and ever live in God when Christ have been baptized in the River Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him you solemnly declare I am your beloved Son graph that your children by adoption reborn of water and the Holy Spirit may always be well pleasing to you as Jesus is the son of God showing baptism we become Gods adopted children as Jesus is free of sin so in baptism we are set free from the  of a milsim and quoting our second reading as Jesus went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil so are we to do the same as his disciples Miss World our baptism is a call to engage in the mission to lead people to Christ to make him known and loved in our particular place and time last Sunday father Wilson address the subject of mission he reminded us that the mission of the church all of us and each of us the mission of the church is to introduce the Light of Christ to the world to everyone and father made it very clear that by everyone. and everyone we don't get to pick and choose as Peter learned in his encounter with the household of Cornelius Peter says in truth I see the God shows no partiality rather in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him baptism is where we all reach Yvette call to Mission each one of us in our own way with the gifts and the strengths and the abilities that each of us has each of us according to our station in life and vocation in life no one is off the hook also none of us is expected to make that Journey alone and thanks be to God for that because two of us could do it alone I like the image of a phonebook I'm sure some of you still remember what phone books are before the internet the pages in the phonebook because there were so many of them we're on very thin paper very easy to tear out or bend off or crumple or Shred but try tearing a phone not so easy I like that image when it comes to our need for community in our face and in our mission together we are strong I would suggest that this is a good answer the folks who feel that I don't need religion I need to go to church I can pray to God in my own time and place Jesus didn't call a bunch of individuals to be his disciples he called them to be a Divine Community is church we need the nourishment of the Eucharist we need to hear the scriptures proclaimed in the assembly we need constancy of ritual and liturgy in sacrament to keep us grounded in a heart of what we are to be out in the world and we need one another the community of the church the people of God the body of Christ to say strong in our mission today we pass from the Christmas season to ordinary time we are reminded we need to be renewed every day in the spirit of Jesus Christ and to paraphrase sister Verna holyhead an image I really like we cannot allow the water of baptism to become dry on us our baptismal identity is this we are missionary Disciples of Jesus Christ who work for justice for right relationships with God and one another who go about doing good and resisting evil and bringing the Light of Christ to everyone we meet
