last fall I was at a small Christian Camp maybe an hour or so south of here with some of our confirmation students maybe Thirty a relatively small group and I will I went there I showed up wearing this little pullover over my black clerical shirt and for those of you too far away to see when I when I showed up they didn't surprise them it's a little kind of the logo of the University of Minnesota on it and none of that none of the kids were particularly surprised to see me and a couple of them who see me wearing this stuff a lot so don't bother is that and I said well not really I said I think I go maybe my first year as a priest and in the mid-90s and then she said oh vintage it's vintage and I said well okay and I didn't really know that match I didn't know what that meant and so I did a little research to find out what vintage mint and I did about 11 minutes of research to to find out that the idea and the the the the idea of vintage is is pretty ambiguous actually it's that it's it's pretty it's a pretty ambiguous I looked up and it and apparently people who work in the in the world of old stuff have a little bit of a little bit of a window of what vintage means typically they're saying maybe fifty to a hundred years old and anything older than that they would call it antique but nobody really really knows for sure and so obviously my pullover is not vintage all right but I did come up with something I have I have a very close friend from a long time ago who prefers his music in a record versus any of the modern technology all right this is got his but it's a pretty good example of what his is it belongs to one of our staff people all right again for those of you uninitiated okay it's a turntable okay and for those of you that can't see it's okay it's a it's a turntable and its use for something called a records okay alright the record all right and apparently these things can be in a bit High a bit high demand and I asked her a person who it belonged I said well well how old is it and he said like got it in 1980 and it's still works perfectly it still works perfectly so I guess technically neither my pullover or the turntable is vintage all right but the turntable is considerably closer alright the turntables considerably Closer by cage but I also think probably buy the thing that makes something vintage in the first place ananas it's actually valuable to someone if I put my pullover on eBay it would get no bits all right if it's turntable went on when on to eBay there would be a lot of people probably who wanted it so they would think it's cool it would remind the maybe of their used maybe they actually own records that they would like to play on it okay whatever it is and the truth is something become vintage not just because it's old because most of us probably an old stuff that we discard very quickly and very easily but it becomes vintage because somebody wants it and somebody recognizes it as valuable and it becomes recognize is valuable precisely because either somebody has a direct experience of it being worthwhile or somebody has shared with them at this is worthwhile believe it or not I I told her the last couple of days by people that they have young adult kids that like to listen to records they like records like oh my goodness not seen one of those in decades all right somebody shared with them that listening to music on a record on a turntable might be really good and so it becomes not just vintage but also becomes a new experience for that we come together this morning celebrate the moment of our faith Jesus rising from the dead we have an evaluation to make about our relationship with that Lord who came into the world to read create the world had to recreate our hearts do we hold on to him do we relate to him as something new as an opportunity to experience something new when the newness and he provides do us every single day of our if it's been two thousand years that's a long time do we relate to him as something vintage maybe something that was part of our past maybe something that was part of our part of our past but maybe brought something brought something into our life May maybe wanted from it because we didn't understand it or or walk away for disillusionment or whatever the case may be spending our thinking you know what this is this is something valuable so we hold on to it as something vintage or do we view it as something simply old obviously the difference between vintage and simply old is that vintage we want all we discard and we would be kidding ourselves we absolutely kidding ourselves if we sat here believing that an awful lot of people a lot a lot of people aren't treating Jesus the savior of the world who died and rose from the dead for filled his promises are treating him as old it's all they're treating the community in the body that he established two thousand years ago as something old is some to be discarded and if people are going to resurrect if you will if people are going to return to that to the gift of faith that was given to them in in baptism it's going to have to be pointed out by us because people know people know they knew immediately who Jesus was repeater got up shortly after the resurrection and began to announce he was telling people things that they already knew that this Jesus went around doing good thing he preached and he taught and frankly he did things in a way that was fairly typical for rabbis of the area that they would gather that people around them to to to teaching to learn into to do their own interpretation the scriptures and all that sort of thing was fairly common what wasn't common is a fact that he actually died and rose from the dead he told them he told him he would and he did they put him unjustly to death & Yeti fulfill that promise the saying three days and I'll be back 3 days and that makes him different cuz they're all sorts of people like that and truth truth lie they were ready to treat him as old after a day as we read through the scriptures and some of the Encounters in the resurrection they are responding as if he's just another one of those people who said he was going to do something for us and then didn't do it but in fact he did he did he said I have to suffer die and rise and he and he did it he's not just another one he's not something just all to discard on the on the pile of many other people who said the same thing and did do what he is difference and because he's risen from the dead we have the grace the ability to set our sights on the higher things at Saint Paul tells us and st. Paul reminds us seek the higher thing don't be held down by the things of the world don't get discouraged by the reality of the world that you live in see your sights on the higher thing and so we all have this decision to make we got this decision to make that relationship with the Lord that relationship with his with his body is it going to be one that we're going to treat his old is it going to be one that we treat as new as he fills us with something new each and every day of our life is going to be something vintage that we back to because we realize we realize actually did it is valuable it might be old it might be able Jesus was so two thousand years 2000 years each and every generation since it has been is been taught and Proclaim but he's suffered died and Rose and the dead that we might have the opportunity and a gift of Salvation and eternal life but every generation also has their own decision to Mane I'm not going to treat this thing as old and set it aside am I going to say you know what this is great for you Grandma but not for me not for me this is old and needs to and needs to be set aside it doesn't fit in the world that we live we all have that we all have that decision stuff becomes vintage our faith becomes vintage only if we choose to hold on to it only if we choose to return to it and only if someone actually shares with us it's valuable the difference between the pole over which is worthless except to me all right and the turntable is that the turntable people see something of value in it's the same I think it's a weak analogy but it's the same thing with Jesus and our faith if other people are going to recognize the value and the importance of it and that's creates vintage or something new somebody's got to share it with them and the only ones who are going to do it are you and me we come together today and we absolutely rejoice in the hope and the promise and the new life all those good things that Jesus gave to us when he writes what he rose from the dead and then we're all we're also called to share it we're also called to share it whether whether it's vintage or new to us is not the word simply has to get out and today we rejoiced in that end in that in that precious gift that Jesus allows us to share the Hope in the promise and the joy of new life that can only come to him and avoid the temptation to say you know what you've been doing it for two thousand years it's over it's not because it starts of fresh and a new every single day he came into the world to recreate world he came into the world to recreate our hearts and let's make a decision whether it's brand-new or it's vintage let's hold on to it and make sure we understand that it is valuable not just for us but for the world we live in
