most of us know that Holy Thursday mass is a is a little bit different and will it will see it in a couple of minutes as we washed 12 people from the parishes feet will see it at the end of mass when we SAS around the church in a beautiful and abbreviated Eucharistic procession but I have to tell you as a as a speak from from my heart there's one thing particularly with our community here at All Saints that's no diff then any other Mass I was standing back there at 6:57 wondering if anybody was coming tonight there were so few of you here just a few minutes before Mass I was just wondering my goodness are we being boycott are what's okay alright and it's the it's it's the same okay it's just that it's just the same and I suppose that's in some ways that said that that's a good thing OK and some ways that that that that's a good thing right how many of you ever ever ever heard or seen the show the Antiques Roadshow raise your hands okay pretty good chunk of us maybe not everyone I used to I used to watch it every once in a while I haven't seen it in I haven't seen it in years but those of you who are not sincerely familiar with the Antiques Roadshow it's this program in which people from some public TV producers go around the country and they set up these these are shows these opportunities for people to bring things from that they owned from from The Collection their house tours or cabins are or whatever and they can go to to people who are experts in in those particular area so if they've got a piece of art from a particular area or history or a knick knack wire or whatever they can go and they can go in and the and the evaluator the appraiser will will tell them how much it's worth give it give him an idea of kind of what the history of it was where came from and then we'll say and you could probably get in a in an auction x amount of dollars all right and it said it's it's kind of fun actually it's kind of its kind of fun and I suspect the people who go and those of us who are interested are are divided maybe not necessarily equally between people who are are are fascinated by the fact that people would would bring bring these things that probably have a lot of emotional connection and attachment maybe it's been handed down for multiple generations and their family maybe it was given to them by somebody special in their life maybe it had pride pride of place in their home for a long time and and they have these the sentimental attachments to their treasures and then there's the there's the other other portion of us that might think they're they're trying to get some cash for their okay they're just trying to get some cash lyrics for their junk and we don't really necessarily know sometimes on the conversations you can you can get a sense that there's their heart breaks when they find out that it's a fake or whatever it is all right and then others that say well you might be able to get some real stuff for this and it's a challenge for them to it that it's a challenge for them to actually give it out because it really does have have some value Beyond money to them and the truth is that's the way Treasures that's the way Treasures are most of it the most common definition of treasure will include something along the lines of it being scarce there's just not that many of them there's not that many of them so it becomes so it so it becomes a treasure the other piece is what did it bring financially so scarcity and in what it might be worth financially are are the two most common characteristics that we associate with treasure but we all know we all know that when we when we deal with our hurts when we deal with when we deal with other things it can go a lot deeper than just how few of them there are or how much they might it might get at an auction and it depends it depends on where it came from it spends an awful lot on gave it to us it depends an awful lot on what the circumstances were in which it came to us and I suspect if I asked everybody for a raise of hands almost every one of us could probably say we've got something in our homes right maybe it's something simple maybe it's maybe it's something a little bit bigger that has tremendous value to us but probably isn't worth that much and it's a value becomes because where it came from and who gave it to us that's where that that's where the value comes and so no one else in the world really except maybe hacen those were closest to us maybe in our families or people we've shared it with no said it's worth anything it's only worth something in the heart of the one who has who has received and so we've got Treasures that are worth a lot of money we also have Treasures that are worth a lot have a lot of capital within are within our hearts and the difference the difference of course is our ability to know that so when it when that when that treasure in the family gets passed down to a Next Generation there has to be some education given to the next recipient or it will become piece of junk and it might end up in the Antiques Roadshow instead of passed down from generation to generation the value of it has to be communicated perhaps in a way that goes Way Beyond finances but in order for that to happen somebody has to know it's somebody has to know that that thing really is a treasure the treasure in our family line it's a treasure for me and this is the reason why and that communication has to be absolutely clear to the Next Generation or or it ends up it'll end up in the junkie or they'll forget it or whatever it whatever it is I suspect most of us know and probably saw some pictures earlier this week of the flames hang out of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in in Paris and was a really really Vivid and in frightening and frankly an ugly sight to see this historical Cathedral I took in 300 years starting at 11:16 read to to build and it's going it's going up in flames and we and we see this and everybody knows that the building itself is a world treasure architectural e spiritually and end in Den particularly culturally and in France and for us as it as it is a Catholic people it is it's a it's an image it's an image and it isn't it is it is a Priceless treasure but the truth is within that Priceless treasure or even where are you greater Priceless Treasures within that within the cathedral the truth is that probably a lot of people didn't know they didn't know what was in there and one of the greatest stories that came out of the brewery of the cathedral for me and I'll be honest I like it when the priest is the hero all right I do I'll be honest okay and there was a priest who the hero priest who was the chaplain of the of the of the of the fire department that responded to the fire and he immediately when he got there what was there he knew what was in there and the first thing the first thing that he went after and took these firefighters into great Danger to protect was the Blessed Sacrament we got to go get Jesus out of the Tabernacle it is a treasure and then he went and he knew where he knew where many relics restored including the crown of thorns it was put on Jesus head when when when I took him to the cross and they went and they got that but you know what my gas is there's probably a lot of people in Paris who had no idea there who had no idea of the importance of the Eucharist who had no idea that the crown of thorns that Jesus wore was a relic in that in that cathedral but he understood he knew what the treasure was and so he was able to communicate that and save the treasure and he took people into this in this situation and they saved a bunch of stuff that could have easily been destroyed and lost to us forever but it took him realizing and understanding what it was he knew what the treasure was and so he understood that it was worth the risk to go in and risk his life to protect to make sure that it did not get destroyed that's what Treasures do to us worth more than any check could ever be signed for worth more than anything that we could ever a man it is a great treasure and tonight's tonight we celebrate the greatest treasure that we have that is cheese is giving himself to us in the Holy Eucharist in order for it to unfold as a treasure within our hearts we got to know that it is in our hands this is Jesus that we are receiving this is the gift of G surprise present under the form of bread and it doesn't it does not follow the world's definition of treasure it's not it's not rare it happens at every alter almost everyday in every Catholic Church in the world it's not rare it's not exceptional it's easily accessible at least for us here in most places in the United States it's easy. It's worth no money is worth no money and is the greatest treasure that we have is a greatest gift that we have but it's got to be known it's got to be understood and God understood that as he began this whole process for the first reading of the establishment of of the Passover and what is what is what I do as he establishes that that Passover where that their people it is celebrate in perpetuity they will celebrate forever the freedom that they have been given from Egypt as real as they slaughter the Lambs The unblemish Landmark but we hear we hear that reading reminder of all the rituals that go with it that's the people of Israel e celebrate The Treasure of their freedom but one of the ways that God has given them to remember it into never forgets is the ritual that surrounds it is done every generation and every year the repetition actually helps him realize what a gift it is and when we come into the New Testament and Jesus gives us his body and blood and institutes that the Eucharist in the in the first mass at the Last Supper he is continuing that reality has been handed to him do this in memory of me this is my body this is the what are the New Covenant do this in remembrance of me it is the ritual that allows us to remember what the treasure is and again it is completely contrary to the world that we live in because the world will say you know what if it's exceptional if we don't do it very often if it's an event it might be really worth something if you do it everyday will hacked what's what's the what's that you just do it everyday it's playing it's simple but God in his wisdom says you know what we're going to surround this thing with ritual we're going to surround this thing with with repetition and we're going to make it the Great gift that you ever receive tonight we're beginning we're beginning the walk in a in a treasure that probably not everybody is going to think is a treasure as we walk the path of Jesus we walk the path of his institution of the Eucharist as we walk the path of his betrayal being betrayed by people closest to him as we walk the path of his own stuff Frank and passion that is a treasure it is a treasure to be one with Jesus in his suffering in his dad and especially in his resurrection that is a great treasure that we can never forget the world doesn't understand it and I suspect most of us probably have family members who don't understand it and so that makes it that that makes it incumbent upon all of us who do achieve is in that Eucharist it is absolutely unequivocally the greatest treasure he is entrusted to us is himself and so if the next generation is the people in the world ever going to figure it out if they're ever going to figure it out it's going to have to be us to communicate that it's a worth a lot more than some dusty painting found in somebody's Barn that they bring on TV for you they Wishin it's it's it's it's worth it's worth infinitely more than any of these things that show up on TV it's worth infinitely more than the things of the world typically calls valuable that are scarce and valuable and in in money it is worth the gift of eternal life and the ritual that surrounds it is what we celebrate the institution of tonight this is a great night and it's a it's similar in some ways but it is it is it is it is a different night because we take it to that we take it to the bottom of our hearts and recognize and we are gifted and blessed with a face and the intellect to know that what we receive really is Jesus and the greatest treasure that he is ever left us
