last Sunday we heard in the gospel Jesus Calling Peter Andrew James John and others to follow him experience is teaching the experience the miraculous actions that come with him passage ends with the words they left everything and followed him that particular scene in the gospels is played out I think very profoundly in the movie Jesus of Nazareth those kind of retellings of the Gospel 10 to enrich what the gospel says and it's kind of like using your imagination to put yourself in in the place and the time the aforementioned disciples have witnessed with Jesus is capable of they've been moved by his words and his actions and in the sheen is taking Jesus and some others across the lake so they can continue their mission and it shows Peter he stepped off the boat is on the shore and it's kind of studying the bow is Jesus in step off and there's this very pensive look on his face and you can tell he's he's kind of pleading a choice and you're wondering OKC going to get back on the boat or isn't he and then it shows him the boat off the shore and stepping back and telling the young man in the boat go back to confirm them and he precedes with Jesus and the others a life-changing decision for Peter Millar Ellen intervening time in the gospel between last week's and this week's reading we hear of a number of Jesus teachings and some miraculous works but immediately prior we have Jesus going up to the mountain to pray and when he returns he chooses from among his disciples 12 who he calls apostles the 12 is how they are referred to in the gospel frequently his inner circle MP where is among them and then today we here need to come down from that mountain to a stretch of open land and Jesus begins teaching his disciples his Apostles and as the gospel says a very large crowd we are here this Sunday and the next two Sundays three parts of what's known as The Gospel on the plane excuse me the sermon on the plain it's the beginning of Learning what it entails to be a disciple of Jesus what is it we've signed up for Jesus presence in our passage today for Beatitudes is it happiness and fulfillment and for woes or Warnings and it's teaching immediately begins to contradict the conventional wisdom both of his time and of ours What happiness comes from being poor hungry grieving rejected is this a typo no not at all Jesus means what he says choices decisions are a consistent theme through our for scripture passages this morning in Jeremiah he uses the analogy of where a tree is and whether it will flourish or not and he speaks of how the wise person Roots his or her trust in God and it's like a tree that is planted stream where it can flourish even in times of drought you can bear fruit and the song that goes this image it's the same one as we're some purses were from today Paul speaking to the Corinthians about some of them not believing that Jesus is raised from the dead and he makes the point that that's what we place our hope for eternal life in Jesus is not raised how can we hope to be raised any reiterates Jesus is indeed raised from the dead in the firstfruits of those who have died and the gospel another choice is placed before us it's important that we hear the walls not as kind of Nations but as challenges to make a choice how much is not about how much I have or how good my wife is the choice is about how I view what I have and how I choose to use what I have the further the kingdom to meet the needs of those who go I'm sometimes I'll come across something in my preparation that just needs to be included and credit needs to be given I'd like to share a reflection with you on this passage from scripture was written by father while you're cart it's called turning the Wolves around blessed fortunate happy are you who are rich rich and money or power or Talent OR because you can do so much for the poor you can lift the burden of the oppressed but blessed only if you have the mind of the poor the mind of Christ only if you recognize that you may not do what you will with what you have only if you realized that you were stewards that whatever you own you hold in Trust only if you employ your power for peace your wisdom to reconcile your knowledge to open Horizons your compassion to heal your hope to destroy despair blessed fortunate happy are you who are full now because you are strong enough to feed the hungry but blessed only if you have the mind of the hungry the mind of Christ only if you do not take your food for granted only if you are uncomfortable as long as one sister or brother cries in vain for bread for just for love only if you experience your own emptiness blessed fortunate and happy are you who laugh now because you can bring Joy of Christ to others to those whose days are woven of Tears but blessed only if you can laugh at yourself if you don't take yourself too seriously only if you I Delight in God's creation in the presence of the Trinity within you only if laughter means that you let go let go of the shot of the things that shackle YouTube yesterday that imprison you two to your small selves blessed are you because you are free throughout the gospel this message is clear consider the parable of the Kingdom whatever you've done for the least of these you've done for me the story of Jesus encounter with the Rich Young the parable of Lazarus and the rich man Jesus teaching you cannot serve both God and money and there are many other examples to be blessed means to identify with those who live with poverty do you understand that what I have is not for me alone I am to use what God has given me to lift up those who go we are blessed when we feed the hungry shelter the homeless kill the wounded visit the imprisoned include those who are outcasts educate the illiterate higher the unemployed and so much more I'd refer you to the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy for a more extensive list the truth is I can have all I need and more and still walk the path of blessing I can be without poor hungry grieving rejected and still be attached to the things of this world it is not poverty or wealth that promises blessing or woah but attachments where do I place my trust recall again the rich young man who comes to Jesus and says what must I do to be saved he went away sad because he couldn't get his mind around the idea of letting go of everything that you had in this world he just couldn't fathom that remember in the eyes of the law he was a righteous man still bait all the Commandments of the law but he couldn't let go and take the next step now we know that Jesus did not condemn him for this the passage at one point speaks of how Jesus had great love for him rather than condemning him Jesus observe the difficulty that those who are wealthy that those who have all that they need and more how difficult it can be to place our trust in God there are so many things that can get in the way image of a camel passing through the eye of a needle but the most important line in the passage is when he says for human beings it is impossible but for God all things are possible so let's ask ourselves 2 what am I attached in what or in whom do I place my trust Where is My Hope directed when is two and a half weeks away as we prepare to enter into at Holy and joyful season perhaps these Reflections can be part of our prayer or fasting and our alms-giving
