Honda solemnity of All Saints I've been thinking about what a saint is what are the characteristics of a saint so I asked some of the school children this morning during children's mass and they gave me some good qualifiers once said y'all saying is is peaceful another set of Saint is Holy I think this Gospel of the Beatitudes gives us a great list of criteria for what a saint is the saint is merciful certainly a saint is a peacemaker a saint is a person who lives their life for others even if it's going to cause discomfort or persecution for us so I got a question for you how many of you know people like that let's see a show of hands how many of you know some Steely people with those characteristics okay quite a few hands good a follow-up question how many of you are fat how many of you are saintly let's see some hands good letters are a few hands but noticeably fewer how can this be if we all pretty much knew somebody who is saying Lee did those people just not show up for mass tonight I don't get the disconnect here maybe it's some humility and and certainly that's a good thing or there is something lacking or something longing in us we can off and safe I'm no saint right maybe those words of come out of your mouth went to a restaurant on Saturday dress like a priest because I'm a priest and would you know it it was dress-up night at this restaurant I think you play this is going and I had two buddies with me who are priests and they were dressed like Grease so we kept getting into these conversations are you really or father forgive me and then one man said this father I don't think you have time for My Confession and I looked at him and said yes I do yes I do brothers and sisters we are all called to this High ideal to be Saints to be Steely yet we are and don't think we measure up to a duie but there's a ancient Greek principal here that's at work and I want to make sure I get it perfectly correct in the Greek it goes like this fake it till make it fake it till you make it if we're not Steely if we're not as holy as we want to be then we should fake we should do the Mustangs that we think Saints would do if I realize I'm not virtuous I'm not a saint yet then ask yourself the question when you're caught in a conundrum what would a saint here and do that thing be merciful bring peace be a person who lives for others fake it till you make it and then one day you'll look back and realize I'm that's ain't on that virtuous person that I've been striving to be all these years this is a great challenge for a certainly but a great opportunity to practice the virtues to practice these things and I think the Saints help us do this their Steely example knowing their stories knowing that they weren't always teether I actually had the opportunity earlier this year to sit down with the aunt of a sane blessed Pier Giorgio frassati from Italy his aunt posted me for my friends for dinner in her home and she told us 2 hours worth of stories of her Steely uncle and what stood out the most I think was her kind of deal monkey in some of these you know high and lofty stories that often get told she never met her uncle but her mother was a great friend a pier Giorgio and so she kind of wanted to set the record straight that certainly is piergiorgio was holy he would wake up early even tied a rope around his finger in and held it out the window so the gardener could wake him up in the morning to go to daily mass he didn't want to disturb his family that's a action of a saint but she debunk some of these like superhuman things that know he was a normal guy he had struggles he lived his life differently certainly but he lived his life in progress if you will always gaining Higher Ground and so he had that great image of to the heights that was one of his mottos to the heights of holiness to the heights of whatever the Lord wanted him to live so the Saints can help us live as ideal by the example and even dressing like superheroes are dressing like Saints this is important trust I may have some of you kids you dressed up last night right maybe dressed up like superheroes or ninjas or maybe some of you dressed up like Saints this is important that kind of put that on take on that Persona to fake it till you make it but that at a certain age it's not cool to go trick-or-treating anymore it's not cool to dress up so we can forget that worth continue to strive for some fire ideal so I want to encourage all of us here when we're dressing in the morning dress for sanctity dress like you want to be the saint version of yourself when I put on my clothes in the morning when you put on your uniform or whatever you would dress in dress as if you were putting on the Saint version of yourself and you would stretch for that hire ideal that you be a saint Michael or a Saint Gabriel or a Saint Teresa or st. Justin SI chadh these are are goals to dress the part to put it on to fake it till we make it until we finally reach that Heavenly Homeland that the Lord has called us to see brothers and sisters in this Holy Mass let us ask for Almighty God's help in this task and let us ask all the saints that they would encourage us that they would intercede for us that we here at our Parish would be all set
