I remember one of my first theology classes it was a class on christology the study of Jesus Christ explain that question  member the first the first day the professor came in and you wrote very simple phrase on the board  is a phrase I'm Our Gospel today  but who do you say that I am I need to find the whole of the course all of his lectures to answering this question being from the scriptures to the early writers of the church and up to the present day all those trying to answer this question  toward the end of the semester this particular course had an oral exam 15 minutes  and that the whole grade do or die 15 minutes face-to-face with the professor to show him that you knew something so you could pass the course it's the one of my friends Jerome he walks any it study well he was well-prepared and you just you know knock them out one question after the next play the end of the exam the professor stops you kind of looks up at him and says  but what is your answer to the question  but who do you say that I am my poor friends are almost I didn't study that one I don't know so after think about he gave response  the powerful question but who do you say that I am who do we believe Jesus Christ to be  thanks weiner gospel passage we could have had a very play more awkward situation a very awkward silence  repeater steps in what is going on Jesus is traveling to the know who Jesus is and it's that gift of faith that Jesus that Jesus do play father gives to Peter in which Peters able to personally respond  so answer the question of who is Jesus involve a personal response of fruit of our own reflection  of our own personal Act of Faith but is that enough no God does more Jesus does more to ensure that he can be known and loved throughout all time she  gives us the church teachers us Community founded on Peter The Rock on this Act of Faith the supernatural act of faith that Peter has made he found a community which in its most basic sense means a crazy that a people called a people call together  and who does Jesus call his people around RBC to self but he gives a point of unity and we are human beings we need that point if Unity when Jesus is gone he gives us Siri  as the point of which this community is gathered around to hold them in unity  and this would not have been a foreign car to the Jews so Peter is given these keys and we see in our first reading also a passage about these keys  you know this about this poor person named shabnur and the Lord through the prophet Isaiah's kicking this shebna out of his post as Royal Steward of you know House of David  he's the one that who is supposed to be like the Prime Minister for the hot food the Royal House the king of Israel and the for reasons we won't go into now the Lord is dissatisfied with his faith in him  and so he gives the keys to a Viking this is whatever like and closes no one can open whatever he opens no one can close  Chevy's keys what wood is given this is duty to help manage the kingdom for the king  and this is what the Lord does with Peter today that's does for Peter he says on this gift of faith that you have received and personally responded to I found this community and you will be the one to help Ministry this Kingdom along with me  as we see that there's a communal Dimension to this question of who Jesus is what is if you think about it it's Peter and the apostles and the other disciples who then go out and preach this faith and who live this in community  and we ourselves you know we didn't receive this this this Faith just kind of from our own kind of idea we first heard it from someone we heard it from our parents we heard it from friends maybe someone a priest or someone on a college campus who told us about what it is to be a disciple of Jesus Christ to have faith to have faith in the church and where they get it from go from generation to generation to generation it's that faith that was spoken by Peter and the apostles they went out to all what the parts of the world to preach that Jesus is true God and true man  it's so we have a faith this answer the Fugees Isn't false Faith also as a community in faith in the church in faith in his work through the pope and the Bishops this could be kind of hard for us sometimes I know Peter himself you know sink in the water she denies knowing Jesus sometimes we ourselves can also be dissatisfied with certain human agents within the church receipt mistakes we are encouraged by Saint Paul today who says how deep are the riches and knowledge and the love of God how inscrutable his judge how unsearchable his ways what a mystery it is that God chooses human agents fees Prime Ministers to spread should I jesus can be known and loved knowing that they are imperfect  but still we know that we trust in that this province of God will not fail as he acts through his church is so we know that while certain human beings agents within the church can make mistakes there are other things that they cannot be mistaken about  and what are things that cannot be mistaken about is who is Christ is and what he teaches us  we can always know and have faith that that the same gift that was given to Peter 2 Jesus wasn't just some nice profit guy that he was actually really  true God and true man the Son of God the anointed one  princess set the father gifts to Peter that continues to act within the church  so we have this personal  aspect of it add it to this communal aspect that we are given through the church that we have heard I know where else is just come more together then with the Creed the Creed that we profess every Sunday after the homily  all of us say I believe in one God I believe in Christ the only begotten Son of God born of the father before all ages who became man was born the virgin  we say that all eventually but we see it as a community together  together in faith something that we have received and that we personally profess for ourselves  so we have an opportunity today to allow that gift that we received throughout the ages when we profess Crete today to make it a little bit more of Our Own  so that just as drum poo while he did not have that personal response ready at the timers Professor Ashton got about half the question right he knew what others had said but it was time for him to make it his own and it's the same for us today as we profess together
