in my three years here at All Saints I've come to see the value of props send for three years everytime after every time but most days every time I finish work here screen sing The Graces I go to my upper room and on that second set of stairs in that stairwell hangs this picture until an hour before Mass  end this picture put there by Father Kelly is washing of Peters feet and what I love about this painting is you see Jesus he's buff okay Bernard only that he's intent on washing Peters feet he hit is resorbed in the moment of what is happening and then Peters expression he's like this with furrowed brow  like you're not going to wash my feet never yet he grudgingly how's the Lord to wash his feet  and this is for us in the Christian Life of the sea we have to make will we allow the Lord to wash our feet will we allow him to pour out his life into us and experience the grace and love he has now just as valuable as Peter's response is John in the corner John is leaning over Peter shoulder perched like a little bird and he's looking over Peter shoulder and he's watching what's on the folding but partaking at the same time and he has this look of ecstasy of complete contentment  at what Jesus is doing in the life of his brother Peter my brothers and sister we have a choice as we come to the Chris life will we grudgingly receive The Graces in store for us or I should Point Peter  grudgingly is it Grace's in store for us or be open to what Jesus is doing in our life like John how most of us start Peter okay fine Sacramento, participate  but I'm going to live my life I'll continue to do what I know how to do  be the best that I can be apart from Jesus  what Jesus convened where is that he's going to deny him but at the same time Jesus still loves him and Peter strength relies not in him but in the love of Jesus and he will discover that in time like John does in the present moment will you read scripture and how we approach the Christian Life determines how we receive The Graces in the sacraments will receive them and so that way is when we look at the scripture in tonight's gospel we play something  did Jesus plan to wash the feet of the disciples or not what's the dis spontaneous act or was there planning involved or maybe a little bit of both but we know that Jesus desired to have the last with his disciples and there was some planning involved because he sent his disciples ahead of him to prepare the place for him what's planning there to the utensils those things were ready they were celebrating the Passover in someone's house  now the custom at the time was tell people go to someone's house when you go to another person's house for party for a festivity and what are you do you take a shower will some okay  and so they would be clean  but in route their feet will give dirty so it was an act of hospitality for the hosts to send their slave out to wash the feet of the guests  so they could taste the food they were eating and someone else's feet  and so that's an act of Charity an act of hospitality so was Jesus going in to that last supper preparing to do that  or not well we're not completely sure but there is element of spontaneity here in element of inspiration during the supper do you wear that the father had put everything into his his power and that he would come from God and was returning to God he rose from the supper and then he goes time to wash their feet he's moved by love the father to pour out his life in love for Peter 4 and for all of them disciples gathered  he's moved its spontaneous and this is the mark of true the spontaneity that comes from lack of organization sometimes that works but a spot what present moment and being able to be moved by another someone's truly a list of things to do things do I got to go to work and get things done but when their beloved calls or there's an emergency what happens you put the list down because you're moved by the other person  that's an act of humility that's an act of love and that's precisely what Jesus does he is moved out of love for his disciples so often Stickley Jesus is simply fulfilling all these prophecies which he is and that Jesus is making everything plate which she is but if we simply look at it through that lens Jesus can become a robot  instead of a loving savior  and this is the act when he sees Peter he Stoops low and his feet and he is zoned in on that moment  he's focused on and what the father is about to do she knew he was going to give his life  this also is the work of God God works in spontaneous ways yes there's planning yes there's beautiful that are Jeezy and the sacraments are the ways in which he works  and there's something spawn Phoenix about them yes everything's in place and he gives us all the elements but the way in which he moves not always feel it play be like Peter nothing's happening  another X real like John  can maybe not that Drew okay  but this is how we're call to approach the sacraments and our Christian Life to be open to plan to make time for the Lord to be with him but also to be moved and that's been the beautiful thing about the priest of these last 3 years for me is witnessing how God pours out his love and people's lives  you know how they come into the office or into the confessional or when they call for a hospital visit or when I'm at QuikTrip my favorite place God puts people into our life  and we are called to love them but it comes from reception first can you receive it at these holy liturgies  in in the sacraments what are we receiving at the Eucharist precisely that geez pouring out his entire life and not holding anything back Jesus says at the end to Peter is you are to do likewise  you are called to do likewise when we receive all that Grace how could we keep that to ourselves if planes over just as the water did as it poured upon the feet of Peter and sometimes you think Jesus justify those more Uncle Parts like my hair you wash my hair what is he sanctify defeat the smelly feet the date play  part that we use where we're always walking and our feet begin to reach but what does Jesus say right there in those day-to-day activities yes you fall yes it smells sometime like sin but I pour out my water my love my grace on you  snatch the gift of the priesthood we receive all The Graces from God sometimes I have to say Okay foot down the list sometimes I should pick it up again but I put down the list to receive what God has in store and I pour out that love to whoever is right in front of me and that's not just for the priesthood or they are the ordained priests that's for each and everyone of us we are to receive is The Graces and give them over to those we love the most especially on behalf of the father because everyone he is send to our life is a gift for those around us and most especially for the father we will experience the grace of the play spirit so my brothers and sisters will you be grudgingly accept that Grace  or will you open your heart the spontaneous works of the Lord not only in this Sacrament but in your daily life
